This academic yearhowever, there were no such games, but students fromthe different campuses continued to be involved in severalsporting activities run by the SRC in collaboration with;the Swaziland University and Colleges Sports Association(SUCSA), the Athletics Association of Swaziland andthe Rugby Association of Swaziland. Students from thethree campuses of the University, participated in soccer,volleyball, basketball, netball, pool and athletics.The major sponsors for the games and competitions wereDYNAMIC DISTRIBUTORS and PSI.CLUBS SOCIETIES AND COMMUNITYDEVELOPMENTThe Institution has a number of clubs and societies bothacademic and non-academic which are involved inplanning and organizing seminars and open lectures, aswell as conducting community service. The UNISWACharity Organisation, UNISWA Green Team as wellas Students in Free Enterprise, Peer Counsellors andEducators are actively involved in community service inthe three campuses.STUDENT CHRISTIAN MOVEMENTPastoral care and support also plays a major part of thestudent life in this Institution. In the absence of a Universityand a Campus-based Chaplain, students have organizedthemselves into different groupings, one of such is theStudent Christian Movement.PEER COUNSELLORS AND EDUCATORS (PCE)Peer and Counsellors and Educators have continued toserve as the popular first point of contact for students. Theywork as a vehicle for awareness raising, advocacy and linkwith other service providers in each of the three campuses.This year, they featured in the annual World AIDS DayCommemoration, Wellness and Breast Cancer AwarenessCampaign, Pyjama Night, Amajita Cup Campaign,Voluntary Counselling Testing, Careers Fair Outreaches,Choose-one Campaign, PSI refresher course @ TUMSand the Joint Team Building of the Green Team held atMalolotja Game Reserve.RESIDENCES (KWALUSENI, MBABANE ANDLUYENGO)The University provides on-campus accommodation todeserving students. These are mainly those with distantresidential addresses. The carrying capacity of the hostelsat the Kwaluseni Campus is 1087, Luyengo 470 andMbabane 300 beds. During the year under review, hosteloccupancy was 62% at Kwaluseni, 90% in Luyengo and 72%in Mbabane.STUDENT DISCIPLINEThere are two student disciplinary committees:The Warden’s Disciplinary Committee is chaired by theHead Warden. This Committee deals with cases suchas bringing alcohol on campus, theft and many others.Some students have appeared before this Committee andappropriate punishment has been meted to students whowere found guilty. Serious cases are dealt by the StudentDisciplinary Committee. During the year under review, 138cases were tried by the Warden’s Disciplinary Committee.REPORT OF THE VICE-CHANCELLOR 26
Student Disciplinary CommitteeThe Committee tries assault cases, vandalism, generaldisturbances and many others. The Committee is chairedby a practicing lawyer. During the year under review fourcases were tried by the Committee.STUDENT GOVERNANCEThe student constitution directs that the elections for anew Student Representative Council be held at the endof September each academic year. The SRC Executiveis normally elected at the end of August, i.e. President,Vice President, General Secretary, Minister of Financeand Minister of Internal Affairs. During the year underreview, SRC elections were held in the second week ofSeptember 2011 in accordance with the SRC constitution.The local government for the three campuses, Kwaluseni,Luyengo and Mbabane, were conducted in the third weekof September 2011 by the Campus Electoral Officers. Students areencouraged to report to the Department any breach ofregulations for student discipline that is observed. TheSecurity Unit deploys security officers for 24 hours a dayfrom the main gates, perimeter fences, hostels, classes andlaboratories who patrol all areas to deny, deter, delay, detect,limit and prevent the occurrence of criminal activities inthe University. The Unit also conducts all searches andregisters visitors at the main gates to prevent unauthorisedentry and control authorised entry. It registers students’items at the main gates to ensure that during vacation everystudent takes what belongs to him/her and to assist thestudent in the event the property is stolen and eventuallyrecovered by the police. The Unit provides safety andsecurity tips to students and conduct investigations in theevent an incident occurs.GENERAL INFORMATIONThe 2011/12 Orientation SessionThe current academic year began with the orientation of allnew full-time and part-time students from 1 – 3 August,2011. On the first day students from the three campusesgathered at the Kwaluseni Multi-Purpose Hall where theywere welcomed by the Vice Chancellor. The last two days oforientation were campus-based, and students were orientedin their campus of admission. Speakers were invited toaddress new students and to help them acclimatize touniversity life. The orientation session was evaluated by theorientation participants through an evaluation instrument.The results of the survey were positive.
