FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE - continuedStrategic PlanThe Faculty has a Strategic Plan coveringthe period 2010-2014. Issues in theStrategic Plan relate to introductionof new relevant programmes, such asthose in the areas of environmentalscience, agricultural engineering and/or mechanization, and forestry. Theintroduction of new programmeswould necessitate name change forsome departments during the plannedperiods. Also, human development atBachelor’s, Masters’ and PhD levels isanother issue to be addressed. Otherissues include provision of businessskills; improvements in students’industry and school attachments;developing proposals for establishinglinks; and creating new faculties, centres,and departments. Limited financial resources, has become achallenge in implementing some aspect of the Strategic Plan.Faculty Research and publicationsThe past year has seen members of staff engaged in researchthat address issues in agricultural education, extensioneducation, biotechnology, plant pathology, animal health,food security, soil erosion, conservation agriculture in anintegrated crop and livestock farming system, and povertyissues. Members of staff and students are engaged in avariety of community activities. Staff members receivedinternal and external funding to pursue research activities.Faculty Research AgendaThe Faculty of Agriculture set itself research agendaaimed at addressing some of the objectives of the NationalDevelopment Strategy and pillars of the MillenniumDevelopment Goals. The research themes include:Crop improvement and sustainable crop production;Improvement of livestock and poultry productivity; Landand water resources management; Food security andagricultural productivity; Improvement of teaching andlearning in agriculture; Provision of extension support,training and research; Consumer protection; householdfood security and livelihoods; and Development ofappropriate technologies for fruit, vegetable and flowerproduction.Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in a conversation with Dr. DianaEarnshaw, Head of Crop Production Department during the tour of the Mushroom ProjectField AttachmentThe Faculty of Agriculture continues to provide studentindustry training. During the 2011/2012 academic year,130 students were attached to private, government, andparastatal organisations. Noting that in a rapidly changingworld, the Faculty of Agriculture must become more adept atchanging its curricula and ensuring student exposure to theenvironment’s needs, graduates must be fit for the purposein the industry in which they will find themselves. Graduatesshould be supported in learning to reach and keep themselvesat the cutting edge of their disciplines and professions; and,thus, should be supplemented by training in the personalmastery and systems skills required for them to succeedin multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional teams andsystems. The Field Attachment programme in the Faculty ofAgriculture attempts to provide this training, to some extent.It is hoped that after graduation, students will continue toget jobs in industry; and through the Field Attachmentprogrammes, networking and linkages may result.EntrepreneurshipThe Faculty of Agriculture continues to provide entrepreneurshiptraining to all students enrolled in the Faculty.Students take an entrepreneurship course during thesecond year, and conduct an entrepreneurship project fortwo semesters during the third year of study. Two hundredand two students were involved in entrepreneurship projectcourse during the year. Sciences, and Agricultural Education andExtension an opportunity to contributeto curriculum implementation issues inthe schools. The interaction may improvestudents’ perceptions regarding agricultureand consumer sciences as a mode ofattaining preparation careers, and as a vehiclefor improving the teaching of agriculture andconsumer science in schools. This exerciserequires students understanding thatagriculture and consumer sciences are muchmore than hoeing and weeding or cookingand sewing, but offer career opportunitiessuited in a wide range of interests andcapabilities.Her Majesty the Indlovukazi and Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhornadmiring plants that her Majesty the Indlovukazi received from Thailandwhich are being kept at the Universityof entrepreneurs capable of turning opportunities intojob-creating enterprises. Graduates need support ofexperienced, well qualified and highly motivated mentorsin academia, research, and industry.Student Teaching TrainingThe Faculty of Agriculture continues to provide studentteacher training. During the 2011/2012 academic year,18 and 22 students, from Consumer Science Educationand Agricultural Education, respectively, were attachedto various high schools in the country. Attaching studentsto schools provides the Departments of ConsumerDalcrue Farm Irrigation ProjectThe Dalcrue Farm Irrigation Project wasfunded by the Japanese Government, and iscomplete, thus, cropping plans, during theacademic year, were established to use anirrigation system for the Dalcrue Farm.Master of Science programmesThe Faculty of Agriculture has submitted, during thepast two years, to the Institute of Post-graduate Studies,four MSc proposals in Horticulture, Animal Science, andConsumer Science Education.Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmesThe Faculty of Agriculture Department of AgriculturalEducation started a PhD programme in AgriculturalEducation.
