Nkambule - DirectorVISIONCommunity service for national development.MISSIONTo facilitate the provision of quality and relevantcommunity service and; to integrate community service asa core function of the University of Swaziland.OBJECTIVESThe objectives of the Centre for Community Service are to:Promote the development of community serviceprogrammes;Support the integration of community service learningprogrammes and curricula in co-operation withpartners;Encourage and support volunteerism and extracurricularcommunity involvement by students andstaff;Promote corporate partnership with communities andservice sectors;Facilitate the integration of community service inUNISWA’s quality assurance of programmes;Promote community service-oriented research aimedat solving national development challenges;Publicise integrated community service projects andprogrammes; andDevelop recognition/reward schemes for staff andstudent participation in community service.EXECUTIVE SUMMARYThe Centre for Community Service (CCS) has continuedto implement several initiatives with external stakeholders.The student network of clubs and organizations continueto be a strong partner with the Centre. The Centre hascontinued to work successfully with them over the years.The employees of the University have continued to worktirelessly on university related community service.During the year under review, CCS launched its firstnewsletter which is published once a semester on theUNISWA website. The Centre also hosted a seminarentitled “Corporate Social Responsibility” where fourcompanies namely: Swaziland Beverages, MTN, SPTCand SEC presented papers. The Centre also launched theUNISWA – Kwaluseni Community Programme, which isan ongoing relationship aimed at developing the KwaluseniCommunity.Through the Memorandum of Understanding betweenUNISWA and His Majesty’s Correctional Services theCentre, working with Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE),implemented two projects at the Correctional Services inMatsapa. These are the Wormery Organic Fertiliser Project,a project that was successfully done with 600 inmates beingtrained on how to use worms to produce organic fertiliserfor use in their gardens. The second project was on trainingwarders on computer skills.The CCS continued to establish partnerships with externalshareholders. The Centre implemented the collection ofsanitary pads project in collaboration with Universityemployees, Swaziland Beverages and Matsapa Town Boardemployees. The sanitary pads will be distributed to sixprimary schools in the Kwaluseni community. The Centre,working with its Planning Committee is also in the processof developing the CCS policies and guidelines.69REPORT OF THE VICE-CHANCELLOR
