The University of Zulia, Maracaibo,Venezuela. 2011.ABSTRACTThe present work has the purpose to study the culture as a foundation in thehistorical theory of Jacob Burckhardt. This author presents an unsystematic historicaltheory in which undervalue the historical fact itself for analyzing what it represents. Hishistory is a history of culture, culture means civilization and it is the manifestation ofspirit in a given time. In the development of this paper we will analyze three of his majorworks: Reflections on History, which is his main book where he explains his conceptionof history based on the conditionalities that occurs between the three main foundations:Religion, State and Culture. The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy, which fullyapplies his theory materializing the spirit of the Renaissance man over this period, andthe History of Greek Culture, text that is published in five volumes and in which heanalyzes cultural events which made the Hellenistic civilization.Key Words: history, spirit, culture, manifestation.
