Contentsassessment points for peace education based on heritage51tection when wrecks are within 24 nautical miles of the coast but only when they areover 100 years old.tt Teaching tipCould you identify Lusitania Avenue, Georg-von-Trapp-Strasse, Jellicoe Avenue,Langsdorff Strasse and Langsdorff Drive or Ajax Avenue on a map? What do thesestreet names have to do with the war at sea? Both World Wars have left traces aroundthe world. Sometimes a street name, a plaque on a house, or a postcard, will refer toan event from the past. Local traces of history make a direct appeal to the studentsin their everyday life, with the larger stories and the general lines of history from theWorld Wars reduced to students’ immediate surroundings. Every day they walk orcycle past these sites.A few options:• Are there squares or streets in my city that refer to the First World War and to itsmaritime events? Has the municipal government gone to the trouble to includea reference on a sign to the person or people after whom the square or street isnamed? Many towns and municipalities do not have even cursory information, and the students could inquire at the town hall. Another idea would be to designan alternative street map with your class or school. Which names would youselect and why?• You could also go in search of the local history of your school. Many schoolshave rich histories or were assigned different purposes during the wars. KAPitzemburg, for example, is a UNESCO Associated school from the town ofMechelen, Belgium. The school was founded in 1831 and, as a result, consciouslyexperienced the two World Wars. The school still has certain relicswhich demonstrate this, such as plaques made to remember victims. The schoolis investigating its archives in order to find ‘forgotten’ stories. Many townspeoplefled the war, organizing a refugee route to England. With its historyin mind, the school wants to focus on their ‘colony’ in England and how therefugees crossed the Channel.
