This Peace Bridge is a strong symbol of theconnection between past, present and future.Peace Bridge 3-5 October 2014The reconstruction of the temporary bridge across the River Scheldt from 3 to 5October 2014 was the highlight of the Antwerp ’14-’18 commemoration programme.In 1914, the Belgian army built a pontoon bridge across the Scheldt at the same location,near the historical centre of Antwerp. The bridge allowed the army to supply theNational Réduit of Antwerp, as well as providing for a quick evacuation. Thousandsof people used the bridge to escape the city, among them King Albert I and WinstonChurchill.
