Sociala tabun kring menstruation och normer för kvinnor och flickor har visats bidra till hälsoproblem för dem i katastrofsituationer. Varaktiga utslag och urinvägsinfektioner har uppstått till följd av avsaknad av rent vatten och avskildhet för kvinnor att kunna tvätta och torka trasor som används som menstruationsskydd. Vid en katastrof på Sri Lanka erkände myndigheterna enbart män som familjeförsörjare så hushåll med kvinnor vars män hade dött kunde inte göra anspråk på pengar.
