Plowing with the Highway Department POLICE DEPARTMENT/HARBORMASTER DEPARTMENT: Submitted by Chief Mark Pawlina Providing Excellence in law enforcement and community policing services to our citizens through dedication, fairness and professionalism A review of crime statistics for the month showed no significant trend or pattern. There a few random thefts and break-ins, but most of them were amongst known parties to each other or family members. Domestic calls for service continue to be steady during the winter months, including the month of February. The three new police officers hired have completed all their pre-academy requirements and have been outfitted and equipped to start the five month police academy training sessions. These new officers will be available for full duty in late October 2013 after they complete their courses in Plymouth. Officers have been attending in-service training sessions and programs that have been set up with our regional law enforcement partners. In-service training continues to be non-funded and not supported by the state academies and the burden has fallen on the municipalities to find and pay for our own training. Officers will continue with in-service training sessions for at least another month. The department held its annual tactical training exercise at the school this year, conducting operations at the Middle School this time. The training includes various scenarios that require officers to respond, contain the threat and evacuate innocent persons. This training is in partnership with the schools to enhance our safety program within all of the new Monomoy School District. We continued to meet with school officials for improving school security during the month of February. Operations: H-26 underway to tow disabled fishing vessel from the mooring to the dock. H-25B underway to rescue a stranded kite boarder on Monomoy Island. H-26 underway to retrieve a dinghy adrift in Chatham Harbor. H-26 underway to retrieve a 14’ skiff adrift in Chatham Harbor. H-26 underway to assist in righting a sunken skiff in Ryders Cove. Performed storm preparations in advance of winter storm “Nemo”. H-25B was removed from the water and secured on its trailer. Fish Pier buildings, docks and floats were secured. Additional storm lines were added to the H-26. Portable generator brought online to provide power to the Stage Harbor office and bathrooms during the storm. Conducted post “Nemo” cleanup. Trees, branches, a wooden walkway, four dinghies, sea weed and other debris were removed from the dinghy dock area at the Fish Pier. Water caused by storm surge, was removed from the fuel dispensers and the fuel valve pit in the parking lot at the Fish Pier. H-26 underway in Chatham Harbor to put two (2) flags and three (3) buoys back on station which were displaced during “Nemo”. Also replaced CH-1 buoy which was lost during the storm. H-25B underway to transport insurance adjuster to Adams camp on North Beach Island during demolition. H-25B underway to retrieve a buoy on the beach at Claflin Landing.
