38 KANAREN / EL HIERRO “IT IS BRANDED ON HERE,” Alberto Castañeda Quintero says as he points to his forehead. The date the 29-year-old engineer will never forget is 8 August 2015, the first time energy supply on his island, El Hierro, was 100% renewable. Playing a crucial role in reaching that landmark was the Gorona del Viento power plant, where Quintero works. It is the island’s flagship green project that has put this forgotten corner of the Canaries on the map. The plant’s wind turbines produce electricity that is not only fed directly into the grid, but also pumps water up to a mountain reservoir. In the absence of wind, the power plant still generates energy from the water running back down the mountain. When Quintero got the offer to join Gorona del Viento, he jumped at the chance. “What we are doing here is a world first. I’m doing my absolute dream job,” he enthuses. The island community of El Hierro has a 60% stake in the EU subsidised power plant. Residents pay the same price than before for their electricity and surplus revenue is used, among other things, for school outings. “We give the power to the people,” says Quintero. Das Kraftwerk Gorona del Viento ist das <strong>grün</strong>e Vorzeige-Projekt von El Hierro, das der „vergessenen“ Insel am südwestlichsten Punkt der Kanaren zuletzt Aufmerksamkeit in den internationalen Medien bescherte: Windräder produzieren Strom, der nicht nur direkt ins Netz eingespeist wird, sondern gleichzeitig Wasser in ein Becken auf dem Berg pumpt. Wenn es nicht windig genug ist, generiert das Kraftwerk Energie, indem das Wasser vom Berg wieder hinunterläuft. Als Quintero das Angebot bekam, an Gorona del Viento mitzuwirken, musste er nicht lange überlegen. Er strahlt. „Was wir hier machen ist weltweit einmalig.
