Am 2. Februar, gegen 8 Uhr, bietet die
Kathedrale La Seu in Palma ein kurzes,
aber himmlisches Lichtspektakel: Dann
steht die Sonne so günstig, dass die
große Rosette an die Westfassade des
Kirchenschiffs projiziert wird und mit
der kleineren Rosette oberhalb eine
Acht bildet. Im Christentum ist diese
Zahl ein Symbol des glücklichen
Anfangs. Wer das Unglück hatte, zu
verschlafen, kann das Spektakel am 11.
November sehen. Dann zeigt die
mittelalterliche „Kathedrale des Lichts“
sich ein zweites Mal be-acht-lich schön
(wir gehen wieder ins Bett).
Twice a year, Palma’s La Seu
Cathedral truly lives up to its
“Cathedral of Light” sobriquet. On
2 February and 11 November, the
sun is perfectly positioned at 8am
to project a large rosette onto the
nave’s western façade and, combined
with the smaller rosette above it,
form a figure eight. Whether that
was the Medieval builders’ intention
is impossible to say. Given that the
number eight is considered a symbol
of happiness and new beginnings
in Christianity, we like to think
it probably was.

Wem das alles zu hell und zu früh ist,
der ist im Blind Café in San Francisco
besser aufgehoben. Das Konzept der
Pop-Up-Veranstaltungen beruht darauf,
dass wir ohne visuelle Ablenkung
besser zuhören und andere „Sichtweisen“
entwickeln können. So gibt es im
Stockfinsteren zuerst ein Abendessen
am gemeinschaftlichen Tisch, dann
einen Vortrag eines Blinden mit anschließender
Diskussion und zu guter
Letzt ein Konzert. Wer das Gemeinschaftsgefühl
schon vor dem Dinner
stärken will, kann beim Ticket-Kauf
etwas mehr zahlen und damit Leuten
die Teilnahme ermöglichen, die es sich
sonst nicht leisten könnten.

rather than the miracle of light.
Its pop-up events are like social
experiments where groups eat
together in darkness before listening
to a blind person give a talk. That is
then followed by a discussion and a
concert. Although the audience lacks
the usual diversions of smartphone
screens and other attractive guests,
they gain a completely new “view”
of the world. The café reinforces
its community vibe with its ticketselling
procedure. Buyers can
voluntarily pay extra, making the
event accessible to people who
couldn’t otherwise afford it.
