Those which have a sign are classed as ‘traffic bollards’ and provide low level traffic signage through the use of permitted directional and pedestrian/cycle signs. Traffic signs are Crown copyright ‘Keep left’ bollards There is no highway authority requirement to provide a ‘keep left’ bollard (TSRGD diagram 610) on a traffic island. Designers should assess whether a traffic bollard is required on a site-bysite basis. Retroreflective ‘keep left’ bollards can be used as an alternative to illuminated bollards sited on traffic islands which are lit by street lights, in the following circumstances (TSRGD Table 44): • Mounted on a central island or reservation for a zebra crossing with two Belisha beacons • Mounted on a traffic island and facing the same direction as traffic signals Retroreflective coating should not be used on the rear face of bollards. Illumination Where the sign is erected on a road within 50 metres of any lamp lit by electricity, which forms part of a system of street lighting for that road furnished by means of at least three such lamps placed no more than 183 metres apart, it shall be illuminated. Please refer to TSRGD for further information on the illumination of regulatory signs such as ‘keep left’ bollards. The luminance requirements for traffic bollards are set out in BS EN 12899-2:2007.
