“Bombardier has a
turnover of €300 million
in Spain and a staff of
820 employees, which
represents over 2% of sales
and 1% of employment by
the whole company”
What are the prospects for 2016?
We face it differently, with good sensations. The company
is stronger. We have strengthened the aerospace
programmes: the C Series is channeled and close
to be certified in order to enter into commercial
service. Throughout this year it will be delivered to
the first customers and international aviation will see
its great advantages. In addition, we count on funds for
new operations either consolidation or further investments
that are considered important
by the company. We expect
to follow the same positive path
as recent years with Bombardier
Transportation, with contracts and
sales worldwide.
What is your assessment about Bombardier’s activity
in 2015 and its evolution in the aviation sector?
2015 has been a year of change for Bombardier, which
could be summarized in three points. First, we have made
significant changes in some aerospace programmes: the
Learjet 75 has been cancelled and we looked for a financial
partner for the C Series. We founded it on the Province
of Quebec’s Government, which has acquired 49% stake
in the programme. This difficult situation in the aviation
area has made us to close 2015 with losses, which has not
happened in Bombardier since many years. Secondly, there
have also been changes in the management and structure
of the company, with the arrival of a new director,
Alain Bellemare. And thirdly, another milestone has been
the IPO of the division of trains in order to recapitalize and
give more realistic in the current market valuation. Here
the same Government of Québec has acquire 30% of our
susidiary.
What is the role of Bombardier
Spain within the entire
Group? How is its activity structured?
Bombardier Spain has a turnover
about € 300 million and a staff of 820 employees, in figures
over 2% of sales and 1% of Bombardier’s employment
(70,000 employees and € 16,000 million). Our
business is very focused on the railway sector, most of
the workers are devoted to this area, and there is only a
small part belonging to the area of aviation, working in
suppliers companies, also in airlines’ maintenance, such
as Air Nostrum. We have three manufacturing plants in
Spain of our rail division. This sector is much more specific
and requires a different new product for each client,
whether in Madrid, Barcelona or Valencia. And also, it has
not so much second-hand market. In aeronautics it is different.
Our assembly lines are in Canada, and we have
factories in China, Ireland, Mexico, and Morocco. That
makes the global presence of the railway division is much
more divided, while aviation is more concentrated in these
countries.
And what is the aerospace business in our country?
We have three main sales lines. In Spain, the best
known is that of amphibians, the smallest manufacturing
line but what has brought more benefits to Bombardier
in the country. Here we have sold 34 B215 and
B415 aircraft to the Ministries of Agriculture and Defense,
which are used for firefighting. In addition, throughout
history we have sold about 60 CRJ commercial
aircraft family to Air Nostrum. And finally, we have
sold a quarter of the business jets fleet currently in the
