RRD Scarborough, Cape Town 2016
I am in Scarborough which is south of Cape
Town, South Africa. Scarborough is a small village
that contains everything I love. The white sandy
beach, the clear water and spectacular waves.
Nestled behind the beach are cottages, a small
coffee house, a restaurant, a nice bakery and
people who are generous with their smiles and
stories. Looking out to the sapphire and seemingling
endless ocean, it appears that ships are
balancing on the edge of the earth. We are surrounded
here by mountains that seem to embrace
Scarborough. This gives the impression
that we are the only people in the world. At the
base the mountains are green and lush, which is
such a stark contrast to the top half, ashy grey
and charcoal, a reminder of the fires that came
past only one month ago. It’s quiet here and the
nature reminds me a bit like home.
The smell from the local bakery is making my
mouth water, I remind myself to grab some freshly
baked sour dough before my wetsuit and kite
call me for a session.
Abel Lago, Svetlana Romantsova, Alex Vliege and
Roberto Ricci are awake now too and we are all
sitting and talking, checking the conditions from
the breakfast table. Sharing fresh fruits, locally
made granola and a cup of rooibos tea. All five
of us are almost agitated sitting still at the table,
desperate not to miss these conditions. The
waves are breaking better and better and the sun
is slowly rising. Breakfast is scoffed down, tea is
gulped, we are ready.
Vlora, Anna , Rocco and Nora are also awake. The
kids are so happy to be in Scarborough for the
winter and they are going to this amazing farm
school that I am really jealous of. Rocco and
Nora are Roberto and Vlora’s kids and they keep
us happy and youngwhen we are in Cape Town .
Anna is from Australia and helps out. She is the
super nana. It’s school day and the kids are excited
to go to school.. We are sitting at the table.
I am thinking it’s so nice to see the kids happy to
go playing at the school, it’s not often you see
this now, and we are happy that we are going to
the water.
The neoprenes are hanging in the garden from
the sunset session we had last night.
Pictures from that session are still in my head.
There were penguins swimming around my board
when the sun was hovering over the ocean. It is so
rare to have penguins join you in the surf, especially
when penguins are very, very far from home
at the tip of Africa. The penguins have formed a
small colony on Boulders Beach, not too far from
where we are in Scarborough. It feels like these
animals know that this is a very special spot. We
enjoy the water and the peaceful sunset together.
We tug, stretch and slide into our damp neoprene,
still wet from kiting all day yesterday. We
