The session will explore the implementation of a systematized<br />

approach to evidence-based management, including the<br />

application of program generated evidence (data) as a basis for<br />

program management, enhancement and evolution. Use of<br />

well-established instruments within the context of an agency<br />

service delivery model will be presented as a frame of reference<br />

for the development of leading edge initiatives.<br />

TU176 Guiding Principles for<br />

Age-Friendly Communities<br />

This workshop will present 10 guiding principles for age-friendly<br />

community practice. Developed by Age-Friendly Sarasota, each<br />

principle will be described and illustrated with practical examples<br />

that can be adopted by current and prospective age-friendly<br />

communities throughout the nation.<br />

TU177 Sharing Housing: Aging in Place<br />

Without Isolation<br />

Sharing housing is a realistic option for older adults, if they can<br />

imagine it. This session will explore the barriers to shared housing,<br />

of ageism and fear, and the opportunities to overcome those<br />

barriers with models and community examples. You will learn the<br />

21 benefits of sharing housing as well as steps to promote this<br />

solution in your community, practice and organization.<br />

TU179 The Catalytic Effect of the First Senior<br />

Center in a Community With Many<br />

Seniors but Few Services<br />

The proposal addresses the establishment of the first senior<br />

center in a community with many older adult residents but few<br />

services, and the belief that no services were needed. Its<br />

success became a catalyst for the development of community<br />

senior services and the recognition of the importance of senior<br />

needs on the local agenda.<br />

This session will address workplace bullying, understanding the<br />

impact and developing ways to address and prevent it. Mental<br />

health professionals have few opportunities to share experiences<br />

and knowledge with other helping professionals. Enhance<br />

your current counseling toolbox by joining us to share ideas and<br />

interventions through case studies.<br />

TU183 Advance Planning for People With<br />

Dementia and Their Families<br />

Early planning for both financial and healthcare needs can<br />

empower people with dementia to have a voice in making<br />

important decisions about where they will live, how their<br />

finances will be managed, and what types of healthcare they will<br />

receive, including end-of-life and palliative care. This session will<br />

highlight the benefits of planning, types of advance directives,<br />

how decision-making capacity affects planning, communicating<br />

with families and available resources.<br />

TU185 Building a Trained, Stable and Inclusive<br />

Direct Care Workforce<br />

One of the most compelling challenges facing society is its ability<br />

to ensure a stable direct care/service workforce to meet the<br />

growing demand. Without a stable, well-educated, well-compensated<br />

and well-prepared workforce, the needs of older adults will<br />

go unmet or suffer drastically. Innovative programs for a healthand<br />

long-term care workforce must include direct-care workers,<br />

employers, family caregivers, educators and advocates.<br />

TU187 Caring for the Caregiver: Prepare to Care<br />

1:30 PM | Randolph 3 (East Tower, Bronze Level)<br />

This workshop will provide insight on the development and<br />

execution of the AARP Michigan Caregiving workshop series<br />

pilot. This culturally competent workshop series addresses the<br />

needs of caregivers. The series created a supportive system<br />

among caregivers, providing access to expert and culturally<br />

competent caregiving resources for mind, body, spirit, services<br />

and financial security of the caregiver.<br />
