others regretted it. On the day <strong>of</strong> the Camel, the people had<br />

no intention <strong>of</strong> fighting, but fighting broke out against<br />

their<br />

(i) Adh-Dhahabi said: "No doubt 'kishah completely<br />

regretted going out to Basra and being present on the day<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Camel, and she did not think that the matter would<br />

reach the point it did."389<br />

1.8. The life and martyrdom <strong>of</strong><br />

az-Zubayr ibn al-'AwwSm (4)<br />

His full name was Abu Abdullah az-Zubayr ibn Khuwaylid<br />

ibn Asad ibn 'AbdulL'Uzza ibn Qusayy ibn Kilib a1-Qurashi al-<br />

~sadi.~~' He shared a common ancestor with the Prophet (g) in<br />

Qusayy, and he was the disciple <strong>of</strong> the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (g) and<br />

the son <strong>of</strong> his paternal aunt. His mother was Safiyyah bint '~bdul-<br />

Muttalib. .. He was one <strong>of</strong> the ten whom the Prophet (g) testified<br />

would be in paradise and one <strong>of</strong> the members <strong>of</strong> the consultative<br />

committee.391 He became Mush when he was a young man, at the<br />

age <strong>of</strong> sixteen,392 and he was tortured because <strong>of</strong> that. It was narrated<br />

that ai-Zubayr's paternal uncle used to roll him up in a mat and hang<br />

it up, then he would light a fire underneath so that the smoke would<br />

reach him. His uncle would tell him to go back to disbelief, but az-<br />

Zubayr would say: "I will never go back to disbelief."393 He never<br />

missed any campaign that was led by the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah ($g).394<br />

1.8.1. The first one to unsheathe<br />

his sword for the sake <strong>of</strong> Allah (&)<br />

It was narrated that Sa'eed ibn al-Mnsayyab said: "The first<br />

one to unsheathe his sword for the sake <strong>of</strong> Allah was ai-Zubayr ibn<br />

al-'Awwh. While a*-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwgm was taking a nap, he
