'<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Ttlib 245<br />

into pointing out the fabricated reports by quoting them and<br />

highlighting those narrators who were weak, suspicions, or followers<br />

<strong>of</strong> whims and desires. They drew up a methodology for examining<br />

the reports and determining which to accept, and they were<br />

successful in these efforts.<br />

Among the most prominent <strong>of</strong> those who took on the mission<br />

<strong>of</strong> explaining historical errors and pointing out flaws in the false<br />

reports were: al-Q2di <strong>Ibn</strong> al-'Arabi in al- 'Awcijim min al-Qawiijim;<br />

Imam ibn Taymiyah in many <strong>of</strong> his books and essays, especially his<br />

valuable book Minhrij as-Sunnah an-Nabawiyyah ji Naqd Kalcim<br />

ash-Shia ~n~al-Qadardyyah; the critic adh-Dhahabi in many <strong>of</strong> his<br />

historical writings such as Siyar A'lcim an-Nubala', Tareekh al-Islam<br />

and Mizcin al-l'tidcilj'? Naqd ar-Rijcil; al-~i?fi&'~' <strong>Ibn</strong> Katheer, the<br />

interpreter <strong>of</strong> Qnr'an and historian, in his book al-Bidtyah wan-<br />

Nih6yah; d-HZdh - <strong>Ibn</strong> Hajar al-'Asqall2ni in his books Fath al-Bciri<br />

.fi Sharh Saheeh al-Bukhciri, Lisrin al-Mizrin, Tahdheeb at-Tahdheeb<br />

and al-Ijcibah j'? Ma 'rifat aj-Sahribah.<br />

With regard to the methods used by the Shia to distort the<br />

historical events and images <strong>of</strong> the early generation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Companions and Tsbi'oon, there were many ways, including:<br />

+:* Outright fabrications and Lies<br />

*:* Mentioning a true story or incident, but adding or omitting<br />

details so as to distort it and give the opposite idea.<br />

*:* Quoting reports out <strong>of</strong> context, so that the meaning is<br />

distorted, and a false interpretation <strong>of</strong> events is given.<br />

* Highlighting shortcomings and mistakes while concealing<br />

well-established facts.<br />

+:* Fabricating poetry and attributing it to some poets, in order<br />

to support some so-called historical events, because
