luxury, even if it becomes available to you. Do not weep for anything<br />

that you have lost (<strong>of</strong> worldly gains). Speak the truth, show<br />

compassion to orphans, help the destitute, and strive for the hereafter.<br />

Be an opponent <strong>of</strong> the wrongdoers and support the one who is<br />

wronged. Act upon what is in the Book and never fear the blame <strong>of</strong><br />

the blamers (when striving) for the sake <strong>of</strong> Allah." Then he looked at<br />

Mulpmmad ibn al-Hanaiiyyah and said: "Have you beard the advice<br />

I gave to your two brothers?"1234 He said: "Yes." He said: "I advise<br />

you likewise. I advise you to respect your two brothers because <strong>of</strong><br />

their great rights over you. Follow them, and do not decide about<br />

anything without consulting them." Then he said: "I advise you both<br />

to take care <strong>of</strong> him, for he is the son <strong>of</strong> your father, and you know that<br />

your father loved him." He said to al-Hasan: "I advise you, 0 my<br />

son, to fear Allah, establish regular prayer on time, and pay zak% to<br />

those who are entitled to it. Do wudoo' well, for there is no prayer<br />

without purification, and no prayer is accepted from one who<br />

withholds zakih. I advise you to forgive others, suppress your anger,<br />

uphold ties <strong>of</strong> kinship, be forbearing with the ignorant, keep seeking<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> Islam, verify the facts before making any decision,<br />

always read the Qur'an, be a good neighbour, enjoin what is good<br />

rr 1235<br />

and forbid what is evil, and avoid immoral actions.<br />

When death was imminent, he gave the following advice:<br />

"In the name <strong>of</strong> Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.<br />

This is the advice given by '<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Tiilib, affuming that he hears<br />

witness that there is no God except Allah alone, with no partner or<br />

associate, and that Mulpmrnad is His slave and His Messenger. He<br />

sent His Messenger [Muhammad (@)I with guidance and the<br />

religion <strong>of</strong> truth (Islam), to make it superior over all religions even<br />

though the polytheists, pagans, idolaters and disbelievers in the<br />

Oneness <strong>of</strong> Allah hate it.1236 Verily, my prayer, my sacrifice, my<br />

living and my dying are for Allah, the Lord <strong>of</strong> the 'alameen
