554 '<strong>Ali</strong>'s attitude towards the Kharijites and Shia<br />

the one who forsakes prayer. In fact, taqiyyah in their view is better<br />

than all the pillars <strong>of</strong> Islam. Taqiyyah represents nine-tenths <strong>of</strong> their<br />

religion, and all the pillars and obligatory duties <strong>of</strong> Islam represent<br />

the remaining ~ne-tenth.'~'~ The author <strong>of</strong> al-Kifi narrated reports<br />

under the headings: 'Chapter on taqiyyah,'1021 'Chapter on<br />

concealment,"022 and 'Chapter on speaking openly."023 Al-Majlisi<br />

quoted one hundred and nine <strong>of</strong> their reports in Bihrir al-Anwir in a<br />

chapter called 'Taqiyyah' and being kind for fear <strong>of</strong> hostility.10Z4<br />

3.8.3. Causes <strong>of</strong> this exaggeration<br />

with regard to taqiyyah<br />

This exaggeration with regard to taqiyyah is due to a number<br />

<strong>of</strong> things, such as:<br />

3.8.3.a. Their view that the rulership<br />

<strong>of</strong> the first three caliphs was invalid<br />

The RXldi Shia regarded the rnlership <strong>of</strong> the first three caliphs<br />

as invalid. They and those who swore allegiance to them are regarded<br />

as disbelievers, even though '<strong>Ali</strong> (&) swore allegiance to them,<br />

prayed behind them, fought in jihad alongside them, gave his<br />

daughter Umm Kulthoom in marriage to 'Umar (&) and had a<br />

concubine whom he received from his jihad with Abn Bakr (&).<br />

When he was appointed caliph, he followed in their footsteps and did<br />

not change anything that Abu Bakr and 'Umar (may Allah be pleased<br />

with them) did, as the books <strong>of</strong> the Shia themselves admit.<br />

This proves that the Shiite madh-hab is invalid from its<br />

foundations. They tried to escape these overwhelming contradictions<br />

by using the principle <strong>of</strong> taqiyyah1025 to explain the events <strong>of</strong> their<br />

histoty. They suggested that '<strong>Ali</strong>'s keeping quiet about Abu Bakr<br />

(&) was taqiyyah, and al-Hasan ibn '<strong>Ali</strong>'s yielding the caliphate to<br />

Mu'iwiyah was taqiyyah, and the disappearance and concealment <strong>of</strong>
