616 '<strong>Ali</strong>'s attitude towards the Kharijites and Shia<br />

'<strong>Ali</strong>?" <strong>Ibn</strong> Maljam said: "I will lie in wait for him in the mosque, then<br />

when he comes to pray the dawn prayer, we will attack him and kill<br />

him. If we survive, then we will be happy and will have gotten<br />

revenge; if we are killed, then that which is with Allah is better than<br />

this world and everything in it." Shabeeb said: "Woe to you, if it was<br />

someone other than '<strong>Ali</strong>, it would be more bearable to me. You know<br />

the sacrifices he made for Islam and that he was one <strong>of</strong> the first to<br />

stand with the Prophet (g). I do not feel comfortable with the idea <strong>of</strong><br />

killing him." lbn Maljam said: "Do you not know that he killed the<br />

people <strong>of</strong> Nahrawin, the righteous slaves <strong>of</strong> Allah?' Shabeeb said:<br />

"Yes." <strong>Ibn</strong> Maljam said: "Then we should kill him in revenge for<br />

those <strong>of</strong> our brethren whom he slew." Then Shabeeb agreed.<br />

Then they went to Quth, who was observing i'tikiif in the<br />

Great Mosque, and said to her: "We have agreed to kill '<strong>Ali</strong>." She<br />

said: "If you want, you may come to me." <strong>Ibn</strong> Maljam went back to<br />

her on the night before Friday, the night before the morning on which<br />

'<strong>Ali</strong> was killed in 40 AH. He said: "This is the night on which I<br />

agreed with nly two companions that each <strong>of</strong> us would kill his<br />

target." She brought silk bands and tied them around their chests,<br />

then they took their swords and sat opposite the door from which '<strong>Ali</strong><br />

would come out. When he came out, Shabeeb struck him with his<br />

sword, but his sword hit the jamb <strong>of</strong> the door or a small window. <strong>Ibn</strong><br />

Maljam struck him on the head with his sword. Wardin ran away and<br />

entered his house, and a man <strong>of</strong> his father's tribe entered upon him as<br />

he was taking the silk band from his chest. He asked: "What is this<br />

silk and sword?" They told him what had happened, and he left, then<br />

he came back with his sword, pounced on Wardin and killed him.<br />

Shabeeb went out towards the gates <strong>of</strong> Kindah before dawn. A<br />

man from Hadramawt, whose name was 'Uwaymir, caught up with<br />

him, and Shabeeb still had his sword in his hand. Shabeeb grabbed<br />

the Ha&ami man and threw him to the gronnd. When he saw the
