Mubibb ad-Deen al-Khateeb said: "This report about Taah<br />

and Marwin is a mystery; no one knows where it came<br />

from."284<br />

(d) The reason given for Marwh's desire to kill Talhah (&) -<br />

that M m h accused Talhah <strong>of</strong> helping in the murder <strong>of</strong><br />

'Uthmh (&) - is invalid. There is no pro<strong>of</strong> by any sound<br />

chain <strong>of</strong> narration that any <strong>of</strong> the Companions helped in the<br />

murder <strong>of</strong> 'Uthmh (&).<br />

At the Battle <strong>of</strong> the Camel, MarwZn and Taah were both on<br />

the same side, which was the side <strong>of</strong> those who were calling<br />

for putting things right among the people.285<br />

(f) Mu'Zwiyah (&) appointed Manvh in charge <strong>of</strong> Madinah<br />

and Makkah. 1f it were true that Marwh had done this,<br />

Mu'Zwiyah would not have put him in charge <strong>of</strong> the Muslims<br />

in the places that are most sacred before Allah (B).<br />

There is a report from MmZn ibn al-Hakarn in Saheeh al-<br />

~ukhiiri.~~~ Bukhari is known for being very thorough and<br />

careful in accepting reports; if it were true that M m h killed<br />

Tabah (&), that would have been sufficient reason to reject<br />

his reports and question his character.287<br />

1.6.6. The call <strong>of</strong> Amir al-Mu'mineen<br />

'<strong>Ali</strong> (&) after the battle<br />

As soon as the battle started to die down, the caller <strong>of</strong> '<strong>Ali</strong><br />

(&) cried out: "Do not finish <strong>of</strong>f anyone who is wounded, do not<br />

pursue anyone who is fleeing, do not enter any house. Whoever lays<br />

down his weapon is safe, and whoever locks his door is safe." His<br />

army had no right to any booty except what had been brought onto
