Die Dorotherergasse folgt dem mittelalterlichen Grundriss der Stadt; das Jüdische Museum residiert seit 1993 im Palais Eskeles an der
Dorotheergasse 11.
The Dorotheergasse follows the city´s outline of the Middle Ages; since 1993, the Jewish Museum resides at Palais Eskeles at
Dorotheergasse 11.
In
Rom, Milano, Brüssel, München, Düsseldorf und
London – strategisch den Hotspots des Kunstmarktes
folgend – ist das Auktionshaus präsent; ein Netzwerk,
dem das Dorotheum seine führende Stellung
verdankt.
An der Do-
rotheergasse 17 verdichten sich Tag für Tag Wiener
Geschichten und die internationale Kunstgeschichte
zu einer immer wieder aufs Neue spannenden Erzählung.
The narrow, slightly curved lane between Graben
and Augustinerstrasse is a piece of Vienna
rich in history. Once a popular residential district
of the baroque nobility and lined with numerous
palaces with swell sounding names, today many art
dealers and the galleries Charim and Ernst Hilger also
reside here – two important addresses for contemporary
art. At number 6 in the world-famous Café
Hawelka, generations of Viennese intellectuals came
together. Number 11 has been the Jewish Museum
since 1994. However, the most prominent building at
this top-class address is undoubtedly the Dorotheum.
The well-known auction house, as well as the street,
inherited its distinctive name from the Dorotheer monastery,
once located here. Closed in 1782, it was
henceforth home of the auction house founded in
1707 on the orders of Joseph I. In 1901, the Dorotheum
moved into its splendid palace which features the
prestigious style of the Ringstrasse architecture.
A busy atmosphere surrounds visitors in the
sprawling building. Chic employees rush across the
corridors. The experts at the Dorotheum, responsible
for their respective areas such as for instance the old
masters, stamps, jewellery and contemporary art sit
behind solid, dark oak doors. The enormous Dorotheum
Palace is reminiscent of a ministry or government
building. The expansive, neo-baroque staircase leads
past the interventions of contemporary artists such as
Esther Stocker and Erwin Wurm to the auction hall
on the second floor. During the four major annual
auction weeks of autumn and spring, the tranquil atmosphere
gives way to an expectant jumble. Throughout
this time, a steady stream of visitors pushes up
and down the stairs while feverish suspense for bidding
captures those present in the hall. World-class
works of art are regularly auctioned off at the Dorotheum.
In the recently completed auction week at the
end of November, there were two fantastic drawings
by Egon Schiele, as well as important works by Maria
Lassnig.
In addition to classical modernism and contemporary
art, the old masters are the driving forces of the
Dorotheum auctions, as Managing Director Martin
Böhm emphasises. Thanks to the network of branch
offices established in the last 20 years, the Dorotheum
manages to attract high-profile works to Vienna for its
international auctions. „Up to 80% of the lots at the
big auctions come from our representative offices,“
notes Böhm. The auction house is present in Rome,
Milan, Brussels, Munich, Dusseldorf and London –
strategically following the art market hotspots. The
Dorotheum owes its leading position to this very network.
Despite all globalisation tendencies, which of
course have long penetrated the art trade, the Dorotheum
has remained a genuinely Viennese institution,
where in addition to the major international events,
an auction is held almost every day in one of the more
than 40 divisions. The Republic of Austria has also
traditionally auctioned off its valuables in the Dorotheum
– recently, for example, the complete furniture
of the plenary hall, which was retired in the course of
the parliamentary reconstruction. At Dorotheergasse
17, Viennese stories and international art history unfold
daily into a narrative that is always exciting.
