Sie sind nun seit mehr als drei Jahren in Wien.
Welche Orte in der Stadt haben Sie in dieser Zeit
besonders liebgewonnen?
Als ich im ersten Bezirk gelebt habe, habe ich viele Teile
Wiens im Detail entdeckt, indem ich viel zu Fuß gegangen
bin. Jeder Bezirk hat seine eigenen „Perlen“, jedoch gibt es
etwas ganz Einzigartiges, das sie verbindet. Für mich ist
das mein Lieblingsstil in der Architektur, der Jugendstil. Ich
bin auch ein Wanderfan, besonders am Kahlenberg. Auf
den Hügel steigen, meinen Atem für einige Momente
anhalten wegen der traumhaften Ausblicke auf die Stadt
– um später in Grinzing an den endlosen Weingärten
vorbeizukommen, die dort überall verstreut liegen. Weder
ein Foto noch eine Geschichte sind imstande, diese
Atmosphäre und dieses Gefühl wiederzugeben.
Was macht für Sie Wien so besonders?
Wien ist die beste Stadt, um das Leben zu genießen – mit
einer speziellen Aura und einer besonderen Seele; reich an
Geschichte, mit vielen Museen, einer Fülle an Konzertstätten
und wunderbaren Parks auf der einen und gemütlichen
Heurigen mit fröhlichen Weinverkostungen und
leuchtenden Weihnachtsmärkten auf der anderen Seite.
Wenn Sie Besuch aus Ihrem Heimatland haben,
wohin führen Sie Ihre Gäste zuerst?
Ich nehme sie mit auf einen langen Spaziergang und zeige
ihnen das Herz Wiens. Ich führe sie durch verschiedene
enge Gassen zum Stephansdom, und lenke ihre
Aufmerksamkeit auf jedes kleinste Detail unterwegs. Das
erste Zusammentreffen mit österreichischer Küche findet
natürlich immer in einem typischen Wiener Restaurant
statt. Mein Lieblingslokal ist da das „Herlitschka“, ein altes,
familiengeführtes Beisl. Daher führe ich meine Gäste zum
Probieren von Wiener Schnitzel und Apfelstrudel dorthin.
Haben Sie einen Lieblingsort, den Sie uns verraten?
Egal zu welcher Jahreszeit, ich versuche jede Gelegenheit
zu nutzen, um nach Tirol, Salzburg und Kärnten oder in ein
anderes Bundesland zu fahren. Zudem ist es eines der
größten Vergnügen, in die Wachau zu fahren. Ich mag
kleine und gemütliche Dörfer in Österreich – wie Rechnitz
im Burgenland, Alpbach in Tirol, Gamlitz in der Steiermark
und Obertauern in Salzburg oder Techendorf in Kärnten.
Einheimische in Tracht machen diese kleinen Städtchen
noch fröhlicher und farbenfroher während der Wochenenden
im Sommer.
Welche Erinnerungen werden Sie mitnehmen, wenn
Sie Wien wieder verlassen müssen?
Es ist schwer mir vorzustellen, dass meine Entsendung in
Österreich einmal endet. Ich habe immer noch das Gefühl,
gerade erst angekommen zu sein… Ganz sicher werden
Österreich und Wien für immer in meinem Herzen wie
auch in meinen Erinnerungen bleiben. Darüber hinaus hoffe
ich von Herzen, dass die beiden wunderschönen
Edelweiße, bei denen ich es schaffte, sie aus dem Samen
wachsen zu lassen, ebenso in Litauen blühen werden wie
sie es hier in dieser magischen Stadt tun.
You have now lived in Vienna for three years. Which
parts of the city have you grown particularly fond of
during your time here?
When living in the third district, I discovered some parts of
Vienna in detail just by walking. Each district has its own
”pearls“, yet there is something unique that brings them
together. For me, this is my favourite architecture style,
”Jugendstil“ (Art Nouveau).
I am also a hiking fan, especially at the Kahlenberg.
Climbing up the hill, holding my breath for some moments
because of dreamlike views of the city – then later passing
endless vineyards in Grinzing, spread all over there.
Neither a picture, nor a story is able to convey this
atmosphere and feeling.
In your view, what makes Vienna so unique?
Vienna is the best city to enjoy life – with a special aura
and a particular soul; with rich history, a lot of museums,
plenty of concert places and wonderful parks on the one
side, and on the other side cosy Heurigen with joyful wine
tasting events and shining Christmas markets. Multilayer,
multicolour, multicultural city…
When you have visitors from your home country,
where do you like to take your guests first?
I take them for a very long walk by foot, showing them the
heart of Vienna. I guide them down the different narrow
streets to St. Stephen´s Cathedral, drawing their attention
to each detail on our way. The first meeting with Austrian
cuisine, of course, always takes place in a typical Viennese
restaurant. My favourite one is “Herlitschka“, an old family
run inn. Therefore, I take my guests there to try Wiener
Schnitzel and Apfelstrudel.
Do you have a favourite place in Vienna or Austria and
where is it?
No matter what season of the year we have, I try to use
every opportunity to go to Tyrol, Salzburg and Carinthia or
to any other federal province. In addition, driving to
Wachau Valley is always the biggest pleasure.
I like small and cosy Austrian villages, ”Dörfer“, with lovely
market places and churches in the middle, like Rechnitz in
Burgenland, Alpbach in Tyrol, Gamlitz in Styria and
Obertauern in Salzburg or Techendorf in Carinthia. Locals
dressed in Tracht make those small cities even more
cheerful and colourful during the weekends in summer
time.
Which memories are you going to take with you before
having to leave Vienna again?
It is hard to imagine that my posting in Austria is ending.
The feeling still is as if I have just arrived… For sure, both
Austria and Vienna will always remain in my heart as well
as in my memories. Moreover, I sincerely hope that two
beautiful edelweiss – which I have managed to grow from
seed – will be blossoming in Lithuania as well as they do
here in this magic city.

Universität von Vilnius. Seit September 2014 ist sie Botschafterin von Litauen in Wien. Davor war sie
u.a. in Litauen, Moldawien und Polen stationiert. Sie ist Mutter zweier Kinder.
H.E. Loreta Zakarevičienė was born in Vilnius and studied Applied Mathematics at the Vilnius
University. She has been Ambassador of Lithuania in Vienna since September 2014. Previously, she
served i.a. in Lithuania, Moldova and Poland. She is the mother of two children.
