Plötzlich piepst es im Mercedes – eine Warnung
des Hightech-Mercedes vor einem Drängler, der aus
dem toten Winkel überholen will. „Ah, gut, gut“, bedankt
sich Leko, und wechselt abrupt das Thema hin
zur politischen Causa prima, die momentan sein
Land beherrscht – der im Februar 2016 gestellte Beitrittsantrag
zur EU. Brüssel verlangt natürlich jede
Menge Reformen, insbesondere im Hinblick auf
Minderheitenrechte für Roma und Juden, und hat
der Regierung in Sarajevo einen Katalog von rund
3.400 Fragen geschickt, deren Beantwortung als
Grundlage für den EU-Beitrittsprozess gilt. „Bis auf
eine paar statistische Punkte haben wir 95 Prozent
erledigt“, meint Leko stolz. „Ich hoffe, dass wir 2018
wie die anderen Länder am West-Balkan EU-Beitrittskandidat
werden.“ Dann bremst er sich ein und
sagt noch: „Österreich hat ja bald den EU-Ratsvorsitz.
Darauf hoffen wir natürlich auch.“

S wie „Superior“ – bei Mercedes steht dieser Buchstabe schlicht und einfach für die Spitzenklasse seiner
Modell-Baureihen, also für luxuriöse Limousinen und Coupés. Offizieller Start der S-Baureihe war im Jahr
1972, inwzischen ist bereits die zehnte S-Generation auf dem Markt. „Prinzipiell geht es – und ging es – bei
der S-Klasse immer um technische Innovationen, die anfangs nur in diesen Modellen präsentiert wurden“,
erklärt Clemens Neukomm, zuständig für Diplomatic Sales bei Wiesenthal. So feierte etwa das ABS-Antiblockiersystem
bereits 1978 in einem S-Klasse-Mercedes seine Permiere, ebenso wie das elektronische Stabilisierungsprogramm
ESP (1991) oder das vorausschauende, aktive Fahrwerk Magic Body Control (seit 2013).

and Austria in similar respectful words, pointing
to its number one position as a foreign direct investor
(some 1.7 billion Euro) or a trade volume of nearly
one billion Euro. Also, there are some 200,000 of
his countrymen living here in Austria, many of them
refugees during the war of 1992-95 and half of them
Austrian citizens by now.
”Most of the wounds from this black period of my
country have healed“, Leko says and quickly changes
to a topic which in political cercles back home is causa
prima of all the country's efforts for development
– the application for EU-membership, sent to Brussels
in February 2016. Since then, Bosnia and Herzegovina
is confrontated with a challenging reform
agenda – mainly in regard to rights for minorities
like Roma or Jews – proposed by the EU commission
which has compiled some 3,400 questions that shall
serve as a basis for negotiations. ”95 percent are completed“,
Leko proudly reports. ”We hope, with the
help of Austria's EU-Presidency, to become a candidate
for EU-membership in 2018.“

He not only looks like a rugby player, he actually
is one. In his younger years, the former
rugby club of Tomislav Leko, 1.94 meters
tall, has won many championships in Ex-Yugoslavia.
Today, he even lacks a couple of hours for veteran
matches, the Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina
to Austria (since 2015) regrets. But he did take
time for Cercle Diplomatique's invitation to the 7th
Ambassador's Drive in a vehicle that after the test
drive, Leko simply calls „The Car“ – the new Merce-
