come relief to a grateful people and their inner souls responded to the
note of joyous praise as the report traveled the circuit of the community.
Not only do we rejoice and are glad of heart, but we have felt a
corresponding weight of the responsibility as a political unit we are
about to assume.
We express the hope that all of the inhabitants of the Presidency
will co-operate to discharge successfully those responsibilities which
the new political status will lay upon us.
We sincerely hope that even those who opposed the measure
will rise supremely above themselves by burying their feelings of opposition
and thereby help to make it practicable for the machinery to function
with the least possible friction.
If all of us would pause for a moment to take the manly spirit of
the affair, and we would only give the community interest its premier
position in the new order of things, it would be a comparatively easy
matter for our personal, individual and selfish interest to fade away
from the picture.
So after three years of concentrated battle, the St. Kitts Workers
League.(now the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla Labour Party) won the right
to vote for the people of the territory. It was the first important milestone
along the road to self-government. The next task was to instruct
the masses in the use and power of the ballot together with the responsibility
that went on with it.
