Kitts was 39.8. This was more that twice the rate of some of the other islands in that year and was also higher than the rate in the countries of Europe. The infant mortality rate per 1000 live births for the same period was 308.3 in St. Kitts, which was second in the West Indies only to Barbados where it was 331.0. The searchlight of publicity was also turned on low wages. Some men with families were receiving one shilling per day. Field workers in particular were badly squeezed. Some young people working on the estates were receiving sixpence per day. All of these hardships and many other problems of the time were kept in the public eye. The constant dripping of water erodes the hardest stone. General indifference to these deplorable defects of society began to dissolve. The problems were not new but they assumed new form and meaning as they were then seen in the strong light of constructive newspaper discourse. The Messenger was forceful in its criticism. It suggested effective remedies designed to bring the greatest good to the greatest number. It was not the wealthy class that constitute the greatest number and this was the root of the trouble. The criticism of human exploitation gained support from many quarters. Openly expressed admiration gave added strength and courage to the champion of the workers cause. Each such supporter was himself a champion in his sphere. On the other hand this swell of public consciousness which had been aroused by the press caused uneasiness among the privileged classes. They saw the rolling wave as a challenge to their position and they dashed to the defensive. Boycott With silent concerted action they launched a boycott on The Union Messenger. A goodly number discontinued subscriptions. Most of the local advertisers withdrew their advertisements. The income of the printing plant came chiefly from job work. This was promptly cut. . The government of the day clasped hands with the antagonists in the covert attack and imposed a systematic squeeze on The Progressive Printery by joining the boycott. 8
For several years the pressure was maintained but it did not break the spirit behind the pen that had awakened the bulk of the people and proceeded to develop an enlightened public opinion. Rather this stroke of adversity reinforced the leaders and supporters of the move for broad measures of reform. The Messenger strengthened the agitation for a new social order. It clamoured for improvement in the industrial and economic spheres. It pressed for political reform. This was part of the early contribution of a section of the press to the workers' uphill climb - a display of courage, sincerity and sacrifice. 9
