7 COMFORT FOR THE SICK While the St. Kitts Workers League was engaged in the Caribbean wide battle for political reform there were lots of other problems which had to be tackled at the same time. The health service was crying out for attention from the standpoint of the under-privileged masses. Distressing reports were recounted at each general meeting of the League. The services at the hospital in Basseterre, a public institution, were constantly brought under the spotlight. Serious illness in any part of the island ought to have received quick attention. Victims of accidents in particular ought to have found instant aid. As to people who lived in the country, time and distance were against them; the smaller the income, the more difficult the situation. The Workers League was stimulated by its motto: “For the good that we can do.” It set up committees to check on reports. Later a delegation was appointed to make representations to the Administrator and the Governor of the Leeward Islands regarding some aspects of the medical service and other questions of public concerns. In an open statement on 22 nd November, 1932, the League’s President, T. Manchester, made an announcement of the League’s immediate programme. The following was one of the items: In urging upon Government the need of a motor ambulance for conveying maternity and emergency cases from the out laying districts to the hospitals, and placing the organisation of the League at the disposal of Government (if it is desired) for assistance in devising ways and means for putting in effect such a service.
