In the rest of the League’s evidence on that day, the Commissioners
learnt much more about the resistance which the working people here
were up against. Reference was made to the Buckleys Riots of 1935.
The industrial atmosphere before the disturbance was not the same after.
The riot had had a marked effect on the attitude of both the employers
and the government of the day. Had there been proper means of
collective bargaining and the settlement of workers grievances, the
Buckleys Riots might have been avoided. Realising this three years later
and faced with the Royal Commission, the employers underwent a
change of heart. At the same time the impact of the labour victory in
the first general elections, of the previous year, was still resounding
throughout the land.
