Now let me say in the first place that we have not come out here
with any cut-and-dried scheme in our minds or even any half formulated
scheme which we would put before you as a remedy, a remedy for
difficulties and deficiencies and everything else that is troubling you at
the present time...
It may, in the first place, only be possible to effect closer cooperation
in matters of common interest and mutual concern, economic
than political... We invite expressions of opinion from every section of
the community...

8 Days
During the eight days spent here the Commission had the opportunity of
seeing various aspects of public life at close range for themselves. Four
deputations of an official character spoke to the Commission. These
represented the Workers League, the Agricultural and Com-mercial Society,
the St. Kitts merchants and the Universal Benevolent Association.
In addition the Commission was also addressed by several prominent
individuals.
On the event of their departure, the Messenger commented,
From what we have been able to gather, it appears that the Commissioners
have, throughout, given an unprejudiced hearing in each case,
and have been absolutely non-committal in any comment they offered or
even non suggestive in any question they have asked.
Quite throughly they have digested their terms of reference, and
by their very wide and sensible interpretation of them, have not merely
disarmed distrust, but have encouraged public confidence, and so far as
this Presidency is concerned, have admirably succeeded in obtaining a
frank expression of views on a variety of subjects, in some way or the
other, related to the main issue of Representative Government and
Closer Union.
