Mr. Marryshow then told of the structure and strength of the
Grenada Workingmen’s Association whose motto was One for all,
and all for one. He gave vivid examples of benefits gained by the people
of Grenada by being organised. He continued with a word about his
trip, We are passing through in our way to England via New York to
claim for the people of Grenada and the West Indies what is their right.
We shall go in a very bold way and strike for our liberties of the people
of these Islands who should have a voice in their own Government.
Now then, that is the mission on which we are going, and I hope that, as
a result of my visit, and that of Mr. Edwards there will come an incentive
to join hands with the association, a feeling of political consciousness,
the true spirit of brotherhood, over this fair Island. We know very
well that we cannot succeed unless we show one united front. You know
the old saying “No chain is stronger than its weakest link.”
Our heritage
I want you all, the sons and daughters of the slaves who bore the lash, I
want you to realise that these Islands are ours. You who are working,
bend your energies to build up the West Indies, the West Indies belongs
to you... It is not too late to save yourselves. It is up to you to think politically
and to better conditions for prosperity that shall come after
you. We are indeed the trustees of prosperity; we must hand down these
Islands freer and dearer, more beautiful and more secure to those
who will come after us... Any time I pass a school house, or I see a
child playing in the street, I say to myself ‘There is a future Member of
the Council, or there goes our future Treasurer. You do not know. There
is the plastic material, all they want is a chance to develop... Sometimes
I am very hard on the Anglo- Saxon, but I am not so blind as not
to see his virtues. We imitate their vices and ignore their virtues.
These Islands built up Great Britain; there was a time when the
