Venturing inland, we head to another<br />
farm-style lodge with a completely different<br />
atmosphere and feel. Poronui Lodge is situated<br />
to the south-east of Lake Taupo, and is known<br />
as one of the finest luxury wilderness lodges,<br />
offering fly-fishing, trophy-hunting and horsetrekking<br />
in a spectacular setting.<br />
There are three accommodation options –<br />
Poronui Lodge itself is a world-class wilderness<br />
sporting lodge accompanied by seven adjoining<br />
cabins overlooking the Taharua Valley. Described<br />
as a “purpose-built facility designed to meet the<br />
needs of the discerning angler”, the Lodge is the<br />
heart of the Poronui experience. The rusticluxe<br />
Safari Camp, on the banks of the Mohaka<br />
River, is one of their most well-known options.<br />
It has beautifully-appointed canvas-roofed and<br />
walled cabins and takes glamping to an entirely<br />
new level. Blake House is the stately owner’s<br />
residence available on an exclusive basis only;<br />
it can accommodate up to 16 people in four<br />
double suites and two luxury bunkrooms.<br />
Poronui has a great working relationship with<br />
local iwi – Ngāti Tūwharetoa offer an excellent<br />
opportunity to engage in the local indigenous<br />
culture with their Kai Waho experiences. There’s<br />
also horse riding, mountain biking, clay shooting<br />
and hunting available.<br />

Best Time To Go: November-January. The<br />
warmer months will allow you to really<br />
experience the property as well as a chance<br />
to stay in the Safari Camp a truly unique<br />
experience.<br />
Recommendations: Keep an eye on their<br />
website for ultimate foodie weekends where<br />
they bring in a top chef and often hold events in<br />
the wine cellar – a rustic yet elegant location.<br />
Tariff: Four guests, self-catered, at Blake House<br />
is $2000 per night, all year round. A room in<br />
the lodge will cost $900 per person, per night<br />
in the high season (December-March), and<br />
includes private chef, wait staff, canapés and<br />
pre-dinner drinks, country breakfast, light lunch<br />
