Like a beacon shining across the inner-city desolation, the<br />
Crowne Plaza Christchurch shot a beam of hospitality,<br />
guiding invited guests to the grand opening party. Stations<br />
of culinary excellence surrounded the room and waiters with<br />
Champagne-laden trays blithely glided throughout the crowd. An<br />
interlude from the social joy was taken, enabling the formalities<br />
to be performed, plaudits, anecdotes and thanks falling from<br />
the lips of the speakers. The city’s latest hotel sits upon a portal<br />
to the past, sharing as it does, a common foundation with<br />
Christchurch’s first hostelry, the Golden Fleece.<br />
