bigger in diameter than the standard car, but<br />
even then the 215/45 x 17in Michelin rubber<br />
struggles under power, it is delightful and part<br />
of what makes the 86 so special. The brakes,<br />
too, are sharp, the entire handling package is<br />
undoubtedly special.<br />
As mentioned, the 86 for <strong>2017</strong> gets extra kit<br />
by way of the spec, and the cockpit has been<br />
freshened with quality trim elements creating<br />
a sporty environment that is also one of true<br />
sports car heritage.<br />
On the outside, the 86 has also had a bit of<br />
a tidy up – notably the GT gets a functional<br />
spoiler which is claimed to help high-speed<br />
stability.<br />
The 86 also returns realistic fuel usage<br />
figures – Toyota claims an 8.4l/100km (34mpg)<br />
combined cycle average.<br />
If you have a young family, the 86 isn’t totally<br />
selfish, it is effectively a 2+2 but you can seat<br />
those small of stature in the rear.<br />
Not only do I relate well to the 86 in roadgoing<br />
form, I’m also kept entertained throughout<br />
the summer series of motorsport and the 86<br />
series has provided some close and exciting<br />
racing. This is an area in which Toyota excels, and<br />
its involvement in New Zealand motorsport is<br />
long-standing and one which I hope continues.<br />
Until that series restarts late in the year, I’ll<br />
just have to relive the memory of my latest<br />
86 drive, as it was certainly one of the most<br />
enjoyable for the year so far.<br />
