The abundance of light in the home<br />
is only reflected and enhanced by the<br />
beautiful rich rimu flooring.<br />
When speaking to Mike O’Donnell and Cathie Mcgrath<br />
about their newly re-built Christchurch home, what comes<br />
through most is their evident pride in the space they’ve created,<br />
and the work that’s gone into turning a plan into reality.<br />
When the 2011 earthquake meant that their 1940s artdeco<br />
home needed to be rebuilt, the couple were naturally<br />
disappointed, but were quick to realise the rare opportunity<br />
they’d been given – to rebuild the house they loved in a style<br />
more befitting of the 21st century. Mike and Cathie are the first<br />
to admit that for all its period charm and years of memories,<br />
the original house left a bit to be desired in terms of layout and<br />
functionality, and put counteracting these issues at the heart<br />
of their design brief. “Although art deco houses have beautiful<br />
features, they don’t flow well, and there’s no light,” Cathie<br />
explains, adding that for the new build the couple prioritised<br />
“simple, light-filled, contemporary design”.<br />
To ensure the important elements came together, the<br />
homeowners enlisted Opus Architecture and Summitbuild, and<br />
were thrilled with the collaborative effort.<br />
To help the new four-bedroom, three-bathroom house<br />
embrace modern living, they turned towards the sun, reorientating<br />
the layout of the rooms to make the most out of<br />
natural light. Generous windows in the open-plan kitchen and<br />
living areas allow light the flood the home, bathing it in all-day<br />
sun and accentuating the natural sense of space. Further light is<br />
