Inspired by their time spent living in
Melbourne, Kiwi couple Natasha Rooney and
Scott O’Driscoll returned to Christchurch to
open Uncommon. The minimalist café is light,
airy, and filled with plenty of greenery. It also
serves up Christchurch’s best brunch.
Uncommon offers an unrivalled dining
experience regardless of when you visit, and
always offers a unique twist on café classics.
I often find myself stopping by for a morning
coffee made with beans from the neighbouring
C4 or enjoying a leisurely weekend breakfast of
beautifully-plated buttermilk pancakes. It’s never
easy deciding on a dish at Uncommon as every
menu item is made with high quality, locally
sourced produce. Fortunately, their fantastic
breakfast board offers the best of both worlds –
I urge you to try it next time you’re in.
On this particular visit, we arrive in time for
lunch, as I’m eager to try their fried chicken
burger. Served on an activated charcoal and
coconut bun, the buttermilk-fried chicken is
both crispy and tender. It comes with paprikasprinkled
chips and a strawberry milkshake,
making it the perfect lunchtime treat. The pork
belly banh mi is another crowd-pleaser, further
demonstrating Scott O’Driscoll’s culinary range.
Uncommon offers fine-dining quality food in a
relaxed environment.
Presentation is key at Uncommon, where
every dish is a work of art. Watch as plates
emerge from the open-plan kitchen and marvel
at the seamlessness of the whole operation.
Whether you find yourself at Uncommon for
breakfast, lunch or even a coffee, the attention to
detail, service and overall experience are nothing
short of exceptional. It is a standout café and a
real asset to the central city.
