Neglect of the Southern Field<br />

Oakl<strong>and</strong>, Ca., July 8, 1901.<br />

Dear Brother Evans:--<br />

I can not sleep past one o'clock. I awake with<br />

an aching heart, for I have been in conversation<br />

with you, presenting before you the necessities of<br />

the Southern field. I was in a council meeting. The<br />

Spirit of the Lord came upon me, <strong>and</strong> I addressed<br />

you, my brother, saying, "What more can be said to<br />

impress you with the necessities of the cause of<br />

God? Why do you feel inclined to do so little for<br />

the Southern field? Where do you suppose its help<br />

is coming from?<br />

At the different places at which I stopped on<br />

my way from Battle Creek, I tried to create an<br />

interest in the work in the South, but received only<br />

a little money; I think one thous<strong>and</strong> dollars would<br />

be all that was given. What does this mean? Our<br />
