Business Incubator. Renovations to the
University Center, Leonard S. Washington
Memorial Library and the first floor of the
Emmett W. Bashful Administration Building
were completed in 2014.
Today, SUNO maintains a 100 percent
success rate in state-mandated accreditation,
being accredited by the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools-Commission of
Colleges (SACSCOC) and the following
program-specific accrediting agencies:
Council on Social Work Education (CSWE),
Association to Advance Collegiate Schools
of Business (AACSB) International, National
Council for Accreditation of Teacher
Education (NCATE), Commission of
Accreditation for Health Informatics and
Information Management Education
(CAHIM), and American Association of
Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS).
SUNO awards Associates, Bachelors and
Masters Degrees in the fields of study spread
across four Academic Colleges and a School
of Graduate Studies:
• College of Arts and Sciences offers courses
in Biology, Forensic Science, English,
History, Psychology, Addictive Behavior
Counseling and Prevention, Criminal
Justice, Health Information Management,
Mathematics, and General Studies.
• College of Business and Public
Administration offers courses in Public
Administration, Business Administration
and Computer Information Systems.
• College of Education and Human
Development offers courses in Child
Development & Family Studies and
Educational Studies, with Post-
Baccalaureate Certificate in Early Childhood
Education and Elementary Education.
• School of Social Work offers courses in
Social Work disciplines.
• School of Graduate Studies offers Masters
Degrees in Museum Studies, Criminal
Justice, Computer Information Systems,
and Social Work.
Undergirding these academic courses and
programs is a dedicated faculty, administration
and staff that has helped to steer SUNO successfully
through the challenges it has faced and
overcome. As Chancellor Lisa Mims-Devezin,
Ph.D. has stated, “The faculty bring a wealth and
breadth of knowledge to the fundamental principles
of teaching at all levels. The departments
have designed curricula that are in-depth,
knowledge-based and unproblematic for the
diverse learners that we serve.”
The January 2018 dedication of a new
building for the Millie M. Charles School of
Social Work perfectly illustrates the recent
renaissance of Southern University at New
Orleans. The new building–along with three
others either planned or underway for the
Natural Sciences, Education, and Arts,
Humanities and Social Sciences—is a
testament to the school’s ongoing commitment
to provide the highest quality education to its
students and symbolizes the bright future for
which the school is poised.
