1. Imagine that you are reporting to a government taskforce on problem <strong>gambling</strong>. You can find<br />

the 2003 <strong>Victoria</strong>n Longitudinal Community Attitudes Survey. Research the ‘problem <strong>gambling</strong><br />

continuum’ (see page 97 of the report).<br />

a) What is problem <strong>gambling</strong>?<br />

b) Why should problem <strong>gambling</strong> be thought of as a continuum?<br />

c) Distinguish between low risk, moderate risk and problem gamblers.<br />

d) The taskforce is interested in developing more support for those at risk. What advice can<br />

you give to them based on your research?<br />

Present your findings as a speech to the taskforce, using powerpoint to aid your speech.<br />

2. Reflecting on thinking:<br />

On 5th April 2009, ABC TV’s Media Watch reported on poor reporting of <strong>gambling</strong> statistics.<br />

of the segment.<br />

a) What mistakes did the journalist make?<br />

b) Why can it be useful to distinguish between the median and the average? Use an example<br />

to illustrate your answer.<br />

c) What have you learnt from the Media Watch episode?<br />
