Responsible Gambling | Section D: What are you gambling with?
Factor Explanation Expression
8 Gambling can
feel good.
9 Drinking
alcohol
10 Depression or
anxiety
11 Remembering
big wins.
12 Gambling for
fun turns into
a habit.
If you have a win, especially when
you first begin to play, you might
start to think of gambling as a
way to make money. Some people
think that they can control the
results (they can’t), or they develop
superstitions that they think will help
them win (they don’t). Some people
simply don’t do the maths about
their chances of winning.
Some people who gamble fall into a
habit where gambling becomes the
first thing they think of doing. When
a person gambles a lot, they can lose
sight of the things they used to do or
other ways to have fun.
If your friends spend a lot of time
gambling, you might feel pressured
into gambling more than you’d like.
When someone starts to lose, they
might try to win the money back by
gambling more. Of course, the odds
work against them and they lose
even more.
Some people use gambling as a
reward or treat for themselves. This
might be okay occasionally, but it can
develop into a habit if you don’t have
other ways to reward yourself.
13 Loss or grief. Some people with gambling
problems have won a big amount
in the past, and the experience of
winning was so powerful that they
keep trying to win again.
“I’m going to play the
pokies for a bit first and
I’ll catch up with you
later.”
“I had the most
amazing night! I kept
winning and winning!
It was such a buzz.
I’m going back there
tonight.”
“Well, I can’t stop now.
I’ve lost too much
money.”
“I hate my job.
Dropping into the TAB
every day at least helps
me get through the
day.”
“If I didn’t play poker
I wouldn’t have any
friends. They say they
need me to make up
a table and hang it on
me if I say no.”
“I know I shouldn’t
gamble. But I only do it
after a few drinks.”
