Description of Key Production Divisions<br />

MMK’s technological process encompasses all the production stages, from ore mining to downstream steel<br />

processing.<br />

Mining and Ore Dressing Division<br />

The Company’s Mining and Ore Dressing Division includes the following subdivisions: mines for producing iron<br />

ore, dolomite and limestone, an ore dressing plant, a crushing and calcining plant, an ore preparation plant, and a<br />

sintering plant consisting of 13 sinter machines and 2 sinter stabilization units. The annual capacity of the sintering<br />

plant is 11 m tons of sinter.<br />

Coke and Chemical By-Products Division<br />

MMK has the largest coke and chemical by-products operation among Russian steel companies which consists<br />

of nine coke-oven batteries with a total capacity of 5.7 million tonnes.<br />

Besides coke-oven batteries, the Division comprises a coal preparation shop, a chemical products processing<br />

shop, a gas treatment shop and a coke gas treatment plant which is unparalleled in the world in terms of its<br />

capacity ( 240,000 m3/h).<br />

Blast Furnace Division<br />

The BF Division includes eight blast furnaces with the annual capacity of about 10 million tonnes of hot metal.<br />

As part of the Blast-Furnace Division’s modernization programme, one blast furnace was equipped with a bell-less<br />

top charging device in 2006. In <strong>2007</strong>, 2 more bell-less charging devices were installed and put into operation in two<br />

blast furnaces. It is planned to install bell-less charging devices in all of MMK’s blast furnaces.<br />

<strong>Steel</strong>-Smelting Division<br />

The <strong>Steel</strong>-Smelting Division of MMK consists of the BOF and EAF Shops.<br />

The BOF (Basic Oxygen Furnace) Shop consists of three BOF converters, each with a capacity of 3.43 m tpy, steel<br />

secondary treatment and refinement equipment, and four continuous casting machines.<br />

The EAF (Electric Arc Furnaces) Shop includes two 2-million tpy EAF’s, steel secondary treatment and<br />

refinement equipment, and three continuous casting machines. Besides, the EAF Shop includes a twin-bath<br />

steel-smelting furnace.<br />

Rolling Division<br />

MMK produces the following long products: debars, wire rod, heavy-gage wire, assorted sections and others.<br />

In 2006, MMK commissioned a state-of-the-art complex for the production of long products which includes<br />

three new section mills with a total capacity of 2.010 million tpy.<br />
