午 兩 點 鐘 , 我 們 的 旅 行 車 來 到 了 印 度 馬 德 雅
省 野 生 動 物 園 的 大 門 外 。 剛 剛 在 旅 館 裏 享 用
過 印 度 美 食 和 杜 松 子 酒 , 大 家 此 刻 的 心 情 分
外 輕 鬆 愉 快 。 想 想 那 些 之 前 在 旅 行 手 冊 上 看 到 的 南 亞 動
物 , 即 將 活 生 生 地 出 現 在 我 們 面 前 , 氣 氛 愈 加 高 漲 起
來 。 尤 其 面 前 這 片 茂 密 原 始 的 叢 林 還 是 珍 稀 的 印 度 虎 的
棲 息 地 , 如 果 能 在 此 見 識 一 下 自 然 環 境 中 威 風 凜 凜 的 百 獸
之 王 , 想 必 是 一 次 終 生 難 忘 的 經 歷 。
不 過 在 出 發 之 前 , 隨 行 的 自 然 學 者 Yajuvendra
Upadhyaya 已 經 適 時 地 為 我 們 觀 賞 老 虎 的 熱 情 降 了 一 下
溫 。 因 為 數 量 稀 少 , 能 在 一 次 短 短 的 車 載 遊 覽 中 見 到 老
虎 , 實 在 需 要 一 點 中 大 獎 的 運 氣 。 更 況 且 老 虎 是 夜 行 動
物 , 我 們 到 來 的 下 午 時 分 正 是 牠 們 平 時 休 息 睡 覺 的 時 段 。
憑 著 人 類 的 視 覺 、 聽 覺 等 能 力 , 是 極 難 發 現 隱 藏 在 叢 林 中
的 老 虎 的 , 我 們 大 家 還 是 應 抱 著 瞭 解 當 地 獨 特 的 整 體 生 態
系 統 的 態 度 去 享 受 此 次 旅 程 。 然 而 事 實 證 明 ,Yaju 顯 然 低
估 了 我 們 這 個 旅 行 團 的 運 氣 指 數 , 平 日 裏 數 月 中 難 得 一 見
的 老 虎 , 居 然 與 我 們 幸 運 地 「 狹 路 相 逢 」 了 。
大 家 分 別 登 上 了 數 輛 公 園 特 別 改 裝 的 敞 篷 吉 普
車 ,Yaju 恰 好 是 我 乘 坐 車 輛 的 司 機 。 他 身 上 挎 著 一 臺 看 上
去 很 專 業 的 照 相 機 , 堅 定 銳 利 的 眼 神 令 我 們 這 些 初 來 乍 到
的 遊 客 頗 為 安 心 。 坐 在 我 們 身 後 的 是 負 責 追 蹤 老 虎 的 人 ,
他 在 這 座 叢 林 中 生 活 工 作 了 幾 十 年 , 經 驗 非 常 豐 富 。 他 和
Yaju 一 路 上 用 我 們 聽 不 懂 的 印 地 語 不 斷 交 流 , 似 乎 為 這 趟
旅 程 更 增 添 了 幾 分 神 秘 感 。
Our van pulled up to the park gates at 2 p.m. We had
been broken into groups the night before, and over gin
and tonics at the lodge, our assigned naturalists showed
us maps of the parks and pictures of the wildlife we might see.
The parks of the northern province of Madhya Pradesh are
teeming with endless exotic species of flora and fauna, but we
were mainly concerned with one: tigers.
At the briefing, our naturalist Yajuvendra Upadhyaya (Yaju to
us) attempted to set reasonable expectations. The purpose of our
next day’s journey would be to experience an immersion into a
radically different ecosystem, and although tracked electronically
by the park, tigers were rarely seen on expeditions relying on
human eyes and ears like ours. There could be months between
sightings, and the group today had been lucky enough to spot
one — the odds were stacked against us.
Yaju cheerfully collected us at the gates and we loaded into
a convertible jeep with stadium seating to ensure views were
excellent for everyone. He was in the front, the driver, armed
with his trusty camera. Behind us was the tracker. They communicated
