吉 普 車 發 動 之 後 , 我 們 在 引 擎 的 咆 哮 聲 中 開 上 了 公 園 裏
那 條 砂 土 路 , 瞬 間 打 破 了 這 裏 原 有 的 平 靜 。Yaju 邊 開 車 邊 為
我 們 指 點 著 沿 途 各 種 稀 有 的 當 地 植 被 、 鳥 類 和 其 它 動 物 。 一
隻 躲 在 灌 木 叢 中 好 奇 地 向 我 們 張 望 的 小 鹿 , 看 上 去 和 我 老 家
俄 亥 俄 州 的 鹿 長 得 差 不 多 。 我 低 頭 看 了 一 下 手 錶 , 離 旅 程 結
束 差 不 多 還 有 兩 小 時 , 真 不 知 道 接 下 來 會 有 甚 麼 樣 的 經 歷 。
好 像 一 場 盛 大 演 出 的 暖 場 一 樣 , 越 往 前 走 , 精 彩 的 場 面

聲 啼 叫 。 一 條 身 形 巨 大 的 鱷 魚 , 尾 隨 著 河 流 中 的 一 條 小 船 ,
讓 大 家 不 禁 為 船 上 的 人 捏 了 一 把 汗 。 不 過 , 直 到 他 們 離 開 我
們 的 視 線 , 恐 怖 電 影 裏 的 場 景 也 沒 有 發 生 。 眼 看 時 間 一 分 一
秒 的 過 去 ,Yaju 告 訴 我 們 該 是 掉 轉 車 頭 往 回 返 的 時 候 了 。
就 在 這 時 , 叢 林 中 傳 來 鳥 兒 尖 銳 的 鳴 叫 聲 ,Yaju 說 這 是
一 種 遇 險 時 的 呼 救 信 號 , 意 味 著 周 圍 有 攻 擊 性 的 動 物 出 沒 。
此 時 , 坐 在 車 尾 的 追 蹤 者 開 始 衝 著 Yaju 高 喊 ,Yaju 連 忙 加 速
把 車 開 向 了 我 們 右 側 的 一 條 下 坡 路 上 。 大 家 的 神 經 都 緊 繃 起

was young and enthusiastic, you could tell the tracker had
been listening to these jungles for decades. We thundered
off through the gates and down sand pathways forged
in the dense wood. Yaju pointed out rare indigenous
tree species, birds some of my car mates seemed excited
about, and a deer that looked exactly like the ones I had
grown up with in Ohio. I checked my watch — nearly
two hours left to go. It was a pleasant afternoon, but not
being particularly outdoorsy, after a few monkeys and
some alligators we saw after taking a short boat ride down
a tranquil river, I was ready to head back.
Then we heard it. A shriek from a nearby bird. Yaju explained
that this was a distress call, and it almost certainly
meant a big cat had been sighted. The tracker yelled to drive
faster down the path to our right. We were in pursuit of a
threat, not even knowing what animal we were chasing.
A few other groups had heard the same calls and soon
we were clustered in a valley, all frantically searching the
dense hill in front of us.
