located on the northeast corner of
Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street on
the original site of the Famous Players
Lasky-Paramount Studios which were
established there in 1913. The site
became the NBC Radio Studios in
1938 which were demolished for a
bank building in 1964. Carpenter’s
moved across Sunset Boulevard in
1938, operating a similar facility
through the 1950s.
and in the Hollywood Hills as well as in Griffith
Park where the Griffith Observatory was
located. Films were made on the streets of
Hollywood and in and around its landmarks.
In 1936, Paramount made the film, Hollywood
Boulevard in and around the Hollywood area.
Famed theatrical producer Earl Carroll opened
his Earl Carroll Theatre on Sunset Boulevard in
December of 1938. The dinner-theatre would be
one of the most exciting showplaces in
Hollywood with live revues and spectacular
shows that were brought in from New York. All of
this activity during the 1930s kept Hollywood
the entertainment center of the world.
Below: Famed makeup pioneer Max
Factor opened a newly remodeled
studio in 1935 in the building he had
been located in since 1928. The studio
included a showroom, laboratory,
research and manufacturing plant.
The makeup studio became a meeting
place for many a Hollywood star. It is
now the Hollywood History Museum.
