Left: The Carpenter’s Drive-in was<br />

located on the northeast corner of<br />

Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street on<br />

the original site of the Famous Players<br />

Lasky-Paramount Studios which were<br />

established there in 1913. The site<br />

became the NBC Radio Studios in<br />

1938 which were demolished for a<br />

bank building in 1964. Carpenter’s<br />

moved across Sunset Boulevard in<br />

1938, operating a similar facility<br />

through the 1950s.<br />

and in the <strong>Hollywood</strong> Hills as well as in Griffith<br />

Park where the Griffith Observatory was<br />

located. Films were made on the streets of<br />

<strong>Hollywood</strong> and in and around its landmarks.<br />

In 1936, Paramount made the film, <strong>Hollywood</strong><br />

Boulevard in and around the <strong>Hollywood</strong> area.<br />

Famed theatrical producer Earl Carroll opened<br />

his Earl Carroll Theatre on Sunset Boulevard in<br />

December of 1938. The dinner-theatre would be<br />

one of the most exciting showplaces in<br />

<strong>Hollywood</strong> with live revues and spectacular<br />

shows that were brought in from New York. All of<br />

this activity during the 1930s kept <strong>Hollywood</strong><br />

the entertainment center of the world.<br />

Below: Famed makeup pioneer Max<br />

Factor opened a newly remodeled<br />

studio in 1935 in the building he had<br />

been located in since 1928. The studio<br />

included a showroom, laboratory,<br />

research and manufacturing plant.<br />

The makeup studio became a meeting<br />

place for many a <strong>Hollywood</strong> star. It is<br />

now the <strong>Hollywood</strong> History Museum.<br />
