The Schwab Men’s Store. In about
1948 this building at 6356 Hollywood
Boulevard was stuccoed over with
major alterations performed on the
windows and storefronts (above). The
original appearance was wiped from
memory. Purchased in 2000 by
Hollywood developers and residents
Jose Malagon and David Gajda, they
agreed with Hollywood Heritage to see
what was underneath. As areas of the
1921 terra cotta were revealed, four
historic photos were supplied by
historian Greg Williams, a passerby
donated a 1927 newspaper article with
photos of the structure, and Malagon
and Gajda agreed to a restoration of
the building (right). The project was led
by Randy Van Ausdall with special
effects technician Doug Turner and
restoration painter Amy Higgins
recreating over fifty percent of the
façade lost during the remodeling while
repairing the surviving parts.
