Hollywood Heritage is a private, nonprofit
membership organization dedicated to the
preservation of the historic built environment in
Hollywood, California, and to education about
the role of the early film industry and its
pioneers in shaping that environment.
The organization’s activities include
preservation advocacy, heritage education and
programming and stewardship of two historic
properties: The Lasky-DeMille Barn (1895),
which houses the Hollywood Heritage Museum,
and Wattles Mansion and Gardens (1907), the
last remaining estate in Hollywood that was
built prior to the rise of the film industry.
Hollywood Heritage has played a significant
role in the preservation of numerous Los Angeles
Historic-Cultural Monuments, such as the Janes
House, the Max Factor Building and Studio, the
El Capitan Theater and building, the Egyptian
Theater, more than 200 of the original Walk of
Fame stars, the Art Deco Screen Cartoonists’
Building, the Cinerama Dome, Grauman’s
Chinese Theater, the Streamline Moderne
ABC/Merv Griffin Studios and the historic 1929
Hollywood Bowl orchestra shell. In 1985 it
successfully nominated the Hollywood Boulevard
Historic Commercial and Entertainment District
to the National Register of Historic Places.
Programming at the Hollywood Heritage
Museum includes Evenings at the Barn
(September-June) and screenings of silent films
by The Silent Society, a Committee of
Hollywood Heritage. During July and August
those screenings move outdoors to Paramount
Ranch in Agoura, California as the popular
series Silents Under the Stars (with live piano
accompaniment). The Silent Society also helps
sponsor screenings in cooperation with the
UCLA Film and Television Archive.
In 2000, Wattles Mansion and Gardens was the
proud recipient of a Preserve Los Angeles grant
from the Getty Institute. Work is continuing on
the findings from that project. The Wattles is a
local treasure. In 1993 the Wattles Mansion was
designated as City of Los Angeles Cultural
Monument # 579 and with its heirloom Rose
Gardens and formal Spanish and Italians Gardens
it is a popular site for weddings and film shoots.
