Cathedral Chapel School works with parents
as the primary educators of its students,
fostering a faith community based on the Gospel
message, Catholic beliefs, traditions and values.
The school’s teachers are dedicated to
providing a fundamental education to its
kindergarten through eighth grade students
which focuses on the whole person, including
the intellectual, psychological, social, physical
and aesthetic needs of each student.
The curriculum includes instruction in various
subjects, including religion, reading/literature,
English, mathematics, spelling, science, social
studies, computer, physical education, music and
art. The school is fully accredited by the Western
Association of Schools and Colleges and the
Western Catholic Educational Association.
Cathedral Chapel School first opened its doors
over seventy years ago, on September 8, 1930.
Ten sisters from the Immaculate Heart
community initially served on the school faculty.
The sisters commuted daily from the Hollywood
Motherhouse in a mortuary limousine for five
years before moving to an apartment building
adjacent to the school.
The Sisters of Saint Louis replaced the Sisters
of Immaculate Heart in the late 1960s and lived
in the school convent for close to two decades.
The school’s first lay principal and administrator
was hired in September 1987. Today the school
continues to be a model of Catholic education
under lay leadership.
Some of the earliest improvements made to
the property included paving the schoolyard;
installation of a fire alarm system; an
auditorium refurbishment that included new
stage curtains and window drapes installed by
Paramount Studios; and the installation of an
electrical panel.
In preparation for the twenty-first century,
the school’s Internet connection was upgraded
to include DSL service in the computer lab.
Classroom computers and televisions have also
been networked to enable interactive Internet
lessons and research.
The school’s staff consists of a lay principal,
ten full-time lay teachers, a computer teacher,
music teacher and an art teacher. The staff also
includes three part-time aides, an office manager
and part-time office assistant, an Extended Day
Care Director and five EDC supervisors.
Cathedral Chapel School is committed to
providing students with additional educational
skills allowing them to function responsibly in
and meet the challenges of an ever-changing
society. The school strives to create an
environment of respect for the dignity of all
members of the multicultural community in
which it is located.
