Right: The Woolworth Building. C. E.
Toberman’s first commercial building,
a two-story structure built in 1910 at
6410 Hollywood Boulevard. Operated
by Woolworth’s from 1930 until the
chain’s closing in the 1990s. The CIM
Group ultimately purchased the
building and removed the sheet metal
façade that was added in 1953, and at
the urging of Hollywood Heritage,
agreed to do a restoration of the
existing and missing architecture.
This unique movie theater was to have
been drastically remodeled in 1999 as
part of a new complex to be built
around it. The remodeling was
challenged for over two years by
Hollywood Heritage and the Friends of
Cinerama. The effort garnered support
from such directors as John
Frankenheimer, Stanley Kramer, Joe
Dante, Sam Raimi, and Steven
Spielberg, as well as film critic/historian
Richard Schickel and many others.
Finally agreeing to the preservation of
the Dome and a smaller overall project,
the restoration included the installation
of a three-projector Cinerama, making
it one of only three commercial
Cinerama theaters in the world.
