Symonds by Capita in 2004, to one of the five executive<br />
directors on Capita Symonds’ executive board to his present<br />
position as managing director of Capita Symonds. Those who<br />
know him would say his key strength is to be able to persuade<br />
people to do things they don’t know they should be doing!<br />
Keith Howells, mott macdonald<br />
Keith graduated in civil engineering in 1974 <strong>and</strong> joined one<br />
of the founder companies of Mott MacDonald in 1975. He<br />
spent the first 10 years of his career in infrastructure design<br />
<strong>and</strong> project management, mostly in the water <strong>and</strong> transport<br />
sectors, including two years supervising construction in Iraq<br />
<strong>and</strong> two years managing procurement <strong>and</strong> contracts in Kenya.<br />
He studied <strong>for</strong> an MBA at Cranfield in 1985/6, following which<br />
he undertook a number of master planning <strong>and</strong> feasibility<br />
studies in the infrastructure <strong>and</strong> urban environment sectors in<br />
China, Hong Kong, India, Russia, Egypt <strong>and</strong> southern Africa,<br />
as well as being project director <strong>for</strong> a number of UK water<br />
sector projects. In 1998 he became managing director of<br />
the group’s water <strong>and</strong> environment business, <strong>and</strong> became a<br />
member of the group board in 2002. In 2004 he was made<br />
group managing director, responsible <strong>for</strong> world-wide business<br />
operations. Keith is also a member of the Cranfield School of<br />
Management advisory board <strong>and</strong> was recently selected to be<br />
the chair of the ACE’s large consultancy group.<br />
lawrence Hughes, grontmij<br />
Lawrence has proactively driven Grontmij’s expansion in<br />
the UK <strong>and</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong> since joining the company as managing<br />
director in 2002. He provides strategic direction to the<br />
consultancy which offers the full spectrum of engineering<br />
<strong>and</strong> environmental solutions across the built <strong>and</strong> natural<br />
environment. This includes work in the water industry, the UK<br />
<strong>and</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong>’s national <strong>and</strong> local road network, environmental<br />
