The festivalis known for Korea’s largest granaryfestival, which celebrates the region’smain pride—rice production. The expansive goldenfields dotting Gimje town are highly fertile andoffer optimal conditions for growing rice. Each yearmore than one million tourists visit the festivals.The festival is held every year since 1999 fromlate September to early October. The yearly eventwas selected as an ‘Excellent Festival’ for fouryears between 2004 and 2008. It was designatedas a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage ofHumanity and its existence sheds new light onthe importance of Korea’s agricultural traditions.21
