his works were greatly sought after by tourists on the
Grand Tour, but also for the poetry, sometimes the
melancholy, of the city that he managed to transcribe.
His landscapes, in oil or watercolour, bathing in a
fluid light, showing with the same romanticism, the
overflowing activity of the 19 th century Neapolitan
street, the worried and superstitious faith that is
expressed in its churches and the serenity of the
sublime Amalfi coast. Luminous and calm in some
of his works, Naples becomes in others stormy and
contrasted or vibrant with mystery.
This beautiful view shows the calm but busy morning
in the quarter called Borgo Santa Lucia at the end of the
1830s: the women go about their business cleaning and
repairing, a small market takes place under canopies
with brightly coloured stripes, donkeys are burdened
with merchandise to be transported. The fishermen,
who have dragged their boats onto the bank, are
chatting nonchalantly, priests pass by in groups and the
day serenely begins in this district, one of the oldest of
Naples, which became increasingly fashionable in the
19 th century, with in particular the construction of a
casino that welcomed all the personalities of the time.
Before becoming a neighbourhood of amusement and
trattoria, Borgo Santa Lucia was a source of inspiration
for many artists, landscapists but also sculptors such
as Vincenzo Gemito who abundantly depicted its
scugnizzi. 1 Progressively, the ground was paved and
a bank was built to accommodate a port. The unity
of Italy and the policies of urban renovation that
followed during the 1880s led to an irremediable
change in this quarter of which Gigante has shown us
the picturesque character.

paysages, à l’huile ou à l’aquarelle, baignant dans une
lumière fluide, dépeignent avec le même romantisme
l’activité débordante de la rue napolitaine du xix e siècle,
la foi inquiète et superstitieuse qui s’exprime dans ses
églises ou la sérénité de la sublime côte amalfitaine.
Lumineuse et calme dans certaines de ses œuvres,
Naples devient, dans d’autres, orageuse et contrastée
ou vibrante de mystère.
Cette belle vue montre le matin tranquille mais affairé
du quartier Borgo Santa Lucia à la fin des années 1830 :
les femmes vaquent à leurs occupations de nettoyage
et de réparation, un petit marché s’organise sous des
stores à rayures colorées, des ânes sont chargés de
marchandises à acheminer. Les pêcheurs, qui ont tiré
leurs barques sur la rive, discutent nonchalamment,
des prêtres passent en groupe et la journée commence
sereinement sur ce quartier parmi les plus anciens de
Naples qui devint de plus en plus à la mode au xix e siècle,
avec notamment la construction d’un casino qui
accueillait toutes les personnalités de l’époque. Avant
de devenir un quartier d’amusement et de trattorie,
Borgo Santa Lucia fut une source d’inspiration pour de
nombreux artistes, paysagistes mais aussi sculpteurs
comme Vincenzo Gemito qui s’est largement inspiré
de ses scugnizzi 1 . Progressivement, le sol fut dallé et
un remblai construit pour accueillir un port. L’unité
de l’Italie et les politiques d’aménagements urbains
qui s’ensuivirent dans les années 1880 entraînèrent un
changement irrémédiable de ce quartier dont Gigante
nous montre tout le pittoresque.
