his works were greatly sought after by tourists on the<br />

Gr<strong>and</strong> Tour, but also for the poetry, sometimes the<br />

melancholy, of the city that he managed to transcribe.<br />

His l<strong>and</strong>scapes, in oil or watercolour, bathing in a<br />

fluid light, showing with the same romanticism, the<br />

overflowing activity of the 19 th century Neapolitan<br />

street, the worried <strong>and</strong> superstitious faith that is<br />

expressed in its churches <strong>and</strong> the serenity of the<br />

sublime Amalfi coast. Luminous <strong>and</strong> calm in some<br />

of his works, Naples becomes in others stormy <strong>and</strong><br />

contrasted or vibrant with mystery.<br />

This beautiful view shows the calm but busy morning<br />

in the quarter called Borgo Santa <strong>Luc</strong>ia at the end of the<br />

1830s: the women go about their business cleaning <strong>and</strong><br />

repairing, a small market takes place un<strong>de</strong>r canopies<br />

with brightly coloured stripes, donkeys are bur<strong>de</strong>ned<br />

with merch<strong>and</strong>ise to be transported. The fishermen,<br />

who have dragged their boats onto the bank, are<br />

chatting nonchalantly, priests pass by in groups <strong>and</strong> the<br />

day serenely begins in this district, one of the ol<strong>de</strong>st of<br />

Naples, which became increasingly fashionable in the<br />

19 th century, with in particular the construction of a<br />

casino that welcomed all the personalities of the time.<br />

Before becoming a neighbourhood of amusement <strong>and</strong><br />

trattoria, Borgo Santa <strong>Luc</strong>ia was a source of inspiration<br />

for many artists, l<strong>and</strong>scapists but also sculptors such<br />

as Vincenzo Gemito who abundantly <strong>de</strong>picted its<br />

scugnizzi. 1 Progressively, the ground was paved <strong>and</strong><br />

a bank was built to accommodate a port. The unity<br />

of Italy <strong>and</strong> the policies of urban renovation that<br />

followed during the 1880s led to an irremediable<br />

change in this quarter of which Gigante has shown us<br />

the picturesque character.<br />

la mélancolie, <strong>de</strong> la ville qu’il réussit à transcrire. Ses<br />

paysages, à l’huile ou à l’aquarelle, baignant dans une<br />

lumière flui<strong>de</strong>, dépeignent avec le même romantisme<br />

l’activité débordante <strong>de</strong> la rue napolitaine du xix e siècle,<br />

la foi inquiète et superstitieuse qui s’exprime dans ses<br />

églises ou la sérénité <strong>de</strong> la sublime côte amalfitaine.<br />

Lumineuse et calme dans certaines <strong>de</strong> ses œuvres,<br />

Naples <strong>de</strong>vient, dans d’autres, orageuse et contrastée<br />

ou vibrante <strong>de</strong> mystère.<br />

Cette belle vue montre le matin tranquille mais affairé<br />

du quartier Borgo Santa <strong>Luc</strong>ia à la fin <strong>de</strong>s années 1830 :<br />

les femmes vaquent à leurs occupations <strong>de</strong> nettoyage<br />

et <strong>de</strong> réparation, un petit marché s’organise sous <strong>de</strong>s<br />

stores à rayures colorées, <strong>de</strong>s ânes sont chargés <strong>de</strong><br />

march<strong>and</strong>ises à acheminer. Les pêcheurs, qui ont tiré<br />

leurs barques sur la rive, discutent nonchalamment,<br />

<strong>de</strong>s prêtres passent en groupe et la journée commence<br />

sereinement sur ce quartier parmi les plus anciens <strong>de</strong><br />

Naples qui <strong>de</strong>vint <strong>de</strong> plus en plus à la mo<strong>de</strong> au xix e siècle,<br />

avec notamment la construction d’un casino qui<br />

accueillait toutes les personnalités <strong>de</strong> l’époque. Avant<br />

<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>venir un quartier d’amusement et <strong>de</strong> trattorie,<br />

Borgo Santa <strong>Luc</strong>ia fut une source d’inspiration pour <strong>de</strong><br />

nombreux artistes, paysagistes mais aussi sculpteurs<br />

comme Vincenzo Gemito qui s’est largement inspiré<br />

<strong>de</strong> ses scugnizzi 1 . Progressivement, le sol fut dallé et<br />

un remblai construit pour accueillir un port. L’unité<br />

<strong>de</strong> l’Italie et les politiques d’aménagements urbains<br />

qui s’ensuivirent dans les années 1880 entraînèrent un<br />

changement irrémédiable <strong>de</strong> ce quartier dont Gigante<br />

nous montre tout le pittoresque.<br />
