Chapter Three- “My Sister’s Keeper”

Later that evening after everyone had eaten dinner, Maura and Hope were in the kitchen cleaning

up. As Maura scrubbed away at the dishes, she spoke to her mom.

“I was wondering if maybe Cailin could move in with Jane and I while she is going through

treatment? I plan on asking her but I wanted to speak to you about it first. I would just like to

have her close to me if anything happens. If you want, you are welcome to move in as well. We

will be pretty full but I could find a place for you. Even though Jane protests about it sometimes,

she enjoys having a rowdy house full.”

Hope hesitated for a moment. “No Maura, I couldn't do that to you and Jane. You two already

have your hands full, I know Cailin is in good hands with you for a while. With my work

schedule it would be hard to…”

“Excuse me?” Maura interrupted her mom while dropping her jaw in disbelief. “I’m planning on

taking a leave of absence. You’re telling me you’re not? That’s your daughter for God sake.”

“You know what Maura? I have absolutely had it with you playing judge and jury today. If

you’ll excuse me,” Hope says as she heads out the back door, slamming it behind her.

Maura sighs as she dries her hands on a dish towel. As she walks towards the living room she

hears a scuffle ensuing between her three youngest kids. Abby was biting Maddy and Maddy had

a hold of a handful of Abby’s hair. Amelia was pinching both twins.

“Hey, enough! Stop this right now!” Maura quickly scooped a twin under each arm. “Jane!” she

calls out, exasperation clear in her voice. Emily comes scrambling down the stairs upon hearing

Maura, followed by Riley. “Sorry Maura, I just stepped out for two seconds.”
